We wanted to simplify some things and try to get more execution into the guts part of our offense. o in the past used to get us four or five yards a pop. Lately, weve been getting only three, maybe four yards a run. The Aggies went back to basics and it paid off. Samuels, who hit 14 of 27 passes and had one intercepted, fired a scoring strike to Fred Fernandes with 9: 14 showing in the period. Just before the TD pass, Samuels called a time out after looking over the Bengals defense. On the scoring play, Fernandes got behind the secondary and Samuels laid one on him perfectly. Two minutes later the Aggies scored again, and it was a punt return by Fernandes which set this touchdown in gear. The Big Sky Conference party is over over almost before it began for Weber State. History tells us that no team has ever won the Big Sky football championship in the history of the conference with two losses. So credit unbeaten Montana State with turning out the lights on Webers 1982 championship aspirations by whipping the Wildcats 0 Saturday evening before 10,320 onlookers at Wildcat Stadium. It was fitting that Montana State Coach Doug Graber was speaking of execution after the Bobcats riddled Weber States defense for 407 total yards while extending their winning streak to four games and advancing to 0 in the Big Sky standings. It was fitting because "execute is precisely what MSU did to Weber State on a crisp autumn evening. "I couldn't be more pleased with our execution, noted Graber, the first-yea- r Montana State Coach whose team has already won more games than it did during the entire 1981 season under Sonny Lubick. "We controlled the ball in the second half, and that had a great effect on the outcome. Weber cant score if it doesnt have the ball. 23-2- 3-- Indeed. Montana States domination was so complete in the third quarter that Weber owned the football for only 2:55 while the Bobcats had possession for 12:05. It was a similar situation in the final 15 minutes, with the Wildcats seeing the ball for only six minutes. Its frustrating, admitted Weber Coach Mike Price, whose Wildcats dropped to 2 in the conference, 4 overall, and are now e the owners of a losing streak. Their game plan was to keep our offense off the field and they did a great job of that in the second half. It seemed like their offense was on the field for long periods of time, and that hurt. 0-- four-gam- No, we cant win the conference this year now, continued an emotionally deflated Price. Our role will be a spoiler role now. We still hope we can win seven games, but that will be difficult. Well have to win six in a row to do it now. There were three principal figures who enabled Montana State to tattoo the Wildcats in a game which was not as close as the final score might indicate, thanks to a Weber State touchdown run on the final play of the game by Kelvin Matthews that reduced the winning margin to a mere three points. First, senior running back Tony Boddie terrorized Weber State. The Bremerton, Wash., native Special to The Tribune Jazz Coach Frank Layden warned to learn some things from his opening exhibition game Saturday night About the only thing he learned was that the Kansas City Kings are probably a bit more ready for the NBA season than his Jazz team is The young Kings, who were beaten badly by the Jazz m two exhibition games a year ago, blew past the Jazz in this one, at the St Joseph Civic Center It was the exhibition opener for both teams, and the Jazz will go back to the drawing board for four more practice sessions in the next three days before departing Wed road trip nesday for a that will include six more pre season games Mike Woodson led the Kings with 21 points The guard from Indiana fired in 13 of those in the third quarter, which the Kings concluded with a 12 2 sprint that left them with a lead with 12 minutes to play. In a nutshell, Boddie n was almost a wrecking ball. However, MSU quarterback Mike Godfrey also assisted in dimming the lights on a promising season for the Wildcats. Godfrey picked apart the Weber secondary for 21 completions in 31 attempts passing. His 249 aerial yards and two touchdowns sealed Weber States tomb. But Godfrey also had an assistant in tight end Joe Bignell, who seemed to make catches all the crucial third-downight and concluded the game with nine receptions for 76 yards. Meanwhile, on the Weber side of the ledger, quarterback Tim Bernal did not enjoy a memorable evening, connecting on only 11 of 27 passes for a paltry 136 yards. That was a season low for Bernal yardage-wise- . one-ma- "Tim didn't have a great game, but I dont think you can put the blame on the quarterback alone, suggested Price, whose Cats havent won since a victory over Eastern Washington on Sept. 11 "Montana State is a good football team.
