New Orleans Dear Russell: Your friend may be referring to a report by Dr Edward Cotlier, of the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven Dr Cotlier has suggested that aspirin may slow down or even completely halt the formation of cataracts, thereby possibly eliminating the need for surgery He cautions, however, that it is much too early to tell if aspinn is really effective for this purpose Dr Cotlier became mterested in the possibility of using aspirin to delay cataract formation when he noticed that a number of rheumatoid arthritis patients who had been using fairly large doses of aspirin over an extended period of time had fewer cases of cataracts than patients not taking aspirin A research program that might provide proof of the value of aspirin in preventing cataract formation is bemg planned The study will include about 500 patients and last about three years Dear Dr. Solomon: Every once in a while 1 read about someone who was released from a mental institution and then goes out and shoots someone Why do psychiatrists let people who are dangerous leave these mental institutions?
