Such is the case with Quest of Fire, the new film set 80,000 years ago. Through gestures created by r Desmond Morris (The Naked Ape) zoologist-authoand languages by linguist-autho- r Anthony Burgess, the primitive characters tell a story about the importance of fire in the social development of Homo sapiens. as far as prehistoric Quest for Fire is first-rat- e dramas are concerned. With the fastidious attention Annaud, you to detail by director forget very early on that these actors with gobs of putty on their face, are altering their mannerisms and grunting monosyllabic sounds in mimicry of their ancient predecessors. This is an involving film no small accomplishment for the most part considering previous films which attempted to portray early mankind. Quest for Fire, based on J.H. Rosnys novel La Guerre du Feu, takes place at a time when humans are learning to use, and depend upon, fire. But fire is not the only thing at the center of this story. It is also a tale about the emergence of human emotions Jean-Jacqu- Whether or not all this speculating by the filmmakers about the prehistoric world holds any authenticity is a question for an anthropologist. But as science fiction, Quest for Fire does succeed in spinning a simple tale which only occasionally strains credulity. To say that Quest for Fire" is not a movie for everybody is an understatement. First of all, it is very violent, with scenes of cannibals chomping on burned appendages, of Neanderthals doing bloody battle with crude weapons. There are scenes depicting the filmmakers perception of what sex was the satisfying of a raw and like 80,000 years ago animalistic urge. The story centers around the Ulam tribe, a group of primitive people who possess fire, but do not possess the knowledge to create it. They carry glowing embers in a primordial censer from which they start the flame that warms them, cooks their food and frightens off wild animals. characters and never let their 20th century personas show through. And it is a film with a great deal of humor, something that is rare when telling a serious Films She Salt fake CANNERY ROW Phone 278 47 But Quest for Fire turns too predictable. The overt violence comes with monotonous regularity; director Annaud makes his point about animalistic sexuality a few too many times. tribune 5001 S After a gruesome battle with a band of marauding Neanderthals, the fire goes out. The Ulams are confused and afraid without this pagan god of theirs. l.5-ia Three of the bravest warriors are summoned by the tribes patriarch to search out and capture a new flame. During the quest, the three do battle with the harsh environment, living through encounters with d cannibals, tigers, hairy mammoths, a 6:30 P.M. bear and quicksand.
