Show Health Department Prepares Kits In Wastewater Reduction Effort The Salt Lake y Health Department and area sewer districts are not waiting for the "federal buck the Disneyland dollar." They have taken the matter of wastewater reduction in their own hands. Dr. Harry L. Gibbons, director of the health department, said Thursday efforts have thus far been successful but the "campaign" needs to be beefed City-Count- up. The director informed members of the board of health that approximately 3,500 water saving kits, developed by the health department have been distributed to the Grand Central, Skaggs and Alpha Reta stores in Salt County. The kits, which include a shower flow restrictor, a toilet bag to displace water and leak detector dye at The tables, are also available for cost 50 cents Salt Lake Tribune. Kits Are Selling Dr. Gibbons said approximately half of the kits have been sold, but as yet flows at the wastewater treatment plant in Salt Lake City have not decreased. Part the problem, he explained, is due to a higher water table than usual. There has been a slight increase in culinary water use this winter for all areas served by Salt Lake City public utilities. Our most overused and wasted resource is water, the director said. "We each use approximately 60 gallons of water a day for drinking, bathing, washing. Ninety percent of tne water we use in Salt Lake Valley, ends up is one of the wastewater treatment plants. Kathy Wintch, the health departments informational specialist, said seven of the nine wastewater treatment plants in Salt Lake County are overloaded and the microorganisms that digest the sewage are overworked. Toilet Flushing Everytime a toilet is flushed unnecessarily, or a tap is left to drip, it adds to the burden of these plants. Everything that is flushed, Washed down the drain or thrown into the sewer system has to be filtered out mechanically or digested by the microorganisms. Ms. Wintch said the total average daily flow through the treatment plants is 10.4 million gallons over designed capacity. Dr. Gibbons reported that Salt Lake City used the same amount of water during January 1981 and January 1982. But Sandy used less water in December 1981 compared to December 1980. An increase in January 1982 was noticed compared to January by the Consumer Product Safety Commission twe weeks ago, may be related to health problems for some hypersensitive individuals even though the vast majority of people appear to be unaffected. Foain'tt Vupuis Patti Fricks, assistant director of the Bureau of Environmental Protection, explained that foam insulation emits formaldehyde vapors during the two week to six month curing process. Residual emissions of formaldehyde vapors may continue at low levels for years after the foams installation. Ms. Fricks said the foam insulation, however, is not the only source of evposurp to formaldehyde vapor. It is, in fact, a simple molecule found in nature. The Salt Lake Tribune. Dr. Gibbons told the board plans are under way for the continual promotion of waste water reduction.
