Show THAW WINS LEGAL BATTLE. Is Acquitted of Conspiracy in Escaping Escap-ing From Asylum. New York. Harry K. Thaw was acquitted ac-quitted Saturday of conspiracy in escaping es-caping from the Matteawan asylum August 17, 1913, the charge upon which he was brought back to New York from New Hampshire. Roger Thompson, Richard J. Butler, Eugene Duffy and Thomas Flood, the four men who assisted him in his spectacular spectac-ular flight by automobile from Matteawan Matte-awan to Canada, likewise were acquitted. ac-quitted. After the verdict was announced Thaw was given into the custody of Sheriff Grifenhagen of New York county. The four co-defendants were discharged. A motion to have Thaw committed to Matteawan asylum as an insane person was made by Deputy Attorney General Cook immediately aftei the jury had rendered its verdict. This motion will be combatted by Thaw's attorneys, who hope to secure permission permis-sion from the courts for Thaw to leave the state of New York. |
