Show I Desert Lake is Scene of Serious Shooting Xhe whole county was shocked the forepart of the week by the news of 1 the shooting that took place at Desert 1 Lake last Monday afternoon when J. ft', ("Jack") Behling, one of the most popular young man of the county, was ihot by Postmaster Hyrum Southworth of Desert Lake, and all over what should ' have been a trivial matter which could not be considered, for a moment, as calling for the desperate methods used by Southworth. The young man is in tbeL. D. S. hospital at Salt Lake with i .22 "special" bullet in his body while Southworth lies in the county jail awaiting the outcome of the wound his hind inflicted before any formal charge is placed against him. At last report from the L. D. S. hospital where Brhling is under the care of Dr. J. M. Graham, nothing had heen done toward the removal of the bullet which is reported re-ported by some to be imbedded in one lmg. All hopes are held for the young m .n's recovery, however. There are a great many stories in eirculati' n relative to the shooting but, as near as can be learned, the wounded iran, in compary with Hank Giles, both of whom have been associated with South "orth at various times in the p'.st, went to the Southworth place last Monday shortly after noon to get some articles belonging to Giles which had been left at Southworth' i place. South-worth, South-worth, it is understood, laid claim to these articles in lieu of rent owing Southworth by Giles who had occupied a part of the former's house at some-tine. some-tine. A quilt, chin, and other things composed these articles and while Behl-ir.j Behl-ir.j and Giles were getting these things together, Southworth is understood to (uve come upon them and ordered them away. Giles was not slow to "get out" as commanded, but Behling, who is a brave young fellow himself and one who has a very peaceful disposition could not think that Southworth would shoot a man and so expressed himself. He accordingly made a move to either get the gun or dodge under it when ' Southworth pulled the trigger and the bullet entered Behling's cheek, and, taking a downward course came out under the jaw and again entered the flesh piercing the jugular vein and find-irsr find-irsr loigment somewhere under the collar col-lar bone. Behling did not altogether lose consciousness and told Southworth, who seemed almost paralized with what he had done, to place his finger on the vein which the latter did, holding it there until relieved some time later. Drs. Hill of Huntington and Graham of Castledale were sent for and arrived w very short time considering the roads. The doctors were present and dressing the wounds temporarily hen Sheriff Sitterud and At torney Oveson arrived on the scene. Southworth was peaceably taken charge of by Sheriff Sitterud who returned B'thhimto the county fail, arriving here Tuesday morning at sunrise. Behl-lne Behl-lne was rushed to Salt Lake where he "rived shortly after noon Tuesday. His wife, who was Miss Mildred Nelson f Ferron before her marriage to Behl-'"g Behl-'"g some twenty months ago, left Tuesday Tues-day morning to be at her husband's kdside. Her sisters, Sylvia and Metta, n(i his half-brother Francis of Ogden, met Jack and the doctor at the train "Pfln its arrival in Salt Lake. An ambulance am-bulance was at hand and the wounded yung man, now very weak from the ss of blood, was rushed to the hospital. Jack" Behling, as he was intimately ""own in both Carbon and Emery coun-'"s. coun-'"s. wag raised in Ferron where his lks nw live, having come to this unty from Germany some years ago. Jack" had taken a course at the A. and was very popular all over. He 3 been associated with Thomas antry in the bee business until sorae- lng like a year ago and with his wife ed at Wellington for some time. tel', however, they have been re-r.at re-r.at Ferron though "Jack" had 'n Wellington and Desert Lake fore or less, closing out his holdings. uthworth has been a prominent tesilent of Desert Lake for several J years, coming there from upstate where he has influential relatives in Utah county and other places. He is well educated and is considerable of a land owner. His brother is heavily interested inter-ested in the Castilla springs resort in Spanish Fork canyon. There are some ugly stories heard, such as past threats of injury to Giles and others, but whether or not there is any truth in these or other stories, it is hard to tell. It is understood that the prisoner is intensely in-tensely sorry for his act now and is very nervous and fearful for the young man's condition. It is likely that a charge will soon be brought against him most likely one of assault with intent to commit murder if Behling recovers, while, in the even,, of death, the charge would at least be voluntary manslaughter it is claimed. Judge F. E. Woods has been secured as counsel for Southworlh. |
