Show President Tail's Wisdom It is ncl I by Washington papers that j President T.ift knew what he was doing do-ing iu insisting that Congress consider the Can uli.in reciprocity bill. Republicans Repub-licans all believe in high tarrilf and if j he can now get the house, with a big ; representation of il Jinocrats, t vote it ', down he will have gained his point. On the other hand it is not a decided i fact that the bill will be turned down but a light wdll lie wage 1 against it. i The bill will be defended by Chairman ' Under wooil, democrat, a i l Representa ! tive McCall of Massachusetts, republican, repub-lican, who was the author of the bill. It wiil be opp sed by Congressman Dal-zell Dal-zell of Pittsburg in whose district are ; the greatest steel mills in the world, i He will be assiste l by democrats who are opposed to the measure and will surrendc- to them part of the time that has been allnted to him. As one of the most faithrul and expert ex-pert high protectionists in the country during the many years that he has been in Congress, Dalzell is well qualified to handle the opposition to Canadian reciprocity, re-ciprocity, which can b; construed as little less than a direct blow at the protection pro-tection principle. He is the ranking j republican member of the ways and I means committee since the retirement j of Sereno E. Payne, who was defeated j for re-election, and if the republi-I republi-I cans return to power in the next Con-i Con-i gress, he will be chairman of that committee com-mittee which has the most to do with tariff legislation. |
