Show Alla DECA Teaching Project Little League Continues Registration in Kearns To Initiate Jordan System Memlers Gains Approval SANDY New members of the Alta High School DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) will Jordan School Districts GEMS (Goal-base- d Education Management System) has received national approval from the Joint Dissemination Review Panel in Washington, D.C. Delbert Crump, curriculum administrator, and other district officials made the presentation of the system program Feb. 16 to win unanimous approval for the project. Dr. John Evans, panel chairman, reviewed all aspects of GEMS, and endorsed it on the basis ot its ease of adaptability in other school districts. Hie program, originally totally financed by Jordan District, has gained both state and federal financial backing. A Title IV and Til.e VU Right to Read grant have provided $885,000 over a four-yea- r period for continuing development of GEMS. Special to The Tribune KEARNS Registration continues for Kearns International Little League, according to league official Don Littlewood. The session will be held this Saturday and next, from 10 a m. to 5 p.m. at Zions First National Bank, 4135 Wr. 5415 South. Mr. Littlewood took pains to distinguish Little League from the Western Boys Baseball Association. "Tittle League is a registered trademark with Little League Inc., he said. Headquartered in Williamsport, Pa., it operates worldwide, with participants from Europe, China, Japan, Taiwan arid South America. Mr. Littlewood said most in youth participation in the area is with baseball WBBA, which, he said, conducts no regional or national tournaments. "If youre in WBBA, you can win a state title, but thats all, he said. "If you are in Little you can go all the way to the International World Series, a tournament which is consistently won by the Taiwan leagues. Little League in the United States is divided into four regions, West, Central, East and South, each with a regional tournament. The Kearns International League won third place last COUDTEI Hffi year in tiie Western Reg ionals. He said Little League sponsors alnxit 12 leagues in Utah, all operating on registration fees and snack bar sales. Individual leagues and the national organization also obtain private contributions. The Kearns International League and the Rose Crest League on the east side of the valley are the only two sanctioned Little Leagues in Salt Lake County, he said. Kearns plays at Mower Field, 4000 West and 5000 South. Cost of registration is $25 per child and $20 for each additional child from the same family. The fee covers the price of a hat, uniform rental, insurance, and team and individual photographs at the end of the season. little League, organized years ago, has 2Vi million children between the ages of 9 and 12 who participate in 41,494 teams worldwide.
