Show HAZING GOING ON AT UNIVERSITY OF UTAH it is noj the hazing season in so n; of the u l. v erd t. ei i g an an I so ne s .-nous results will likely ninuw an attempt at-tempt made by one of tne uinv.rsi-, classes to clip tne hair of one Cluvnc; Ederbeck, whi resented the attack wun a loaded revolver. The students had been whitewashing the U. and were meting out tneir penalty pen-alty on those who di I not assist in th ; work, when theunfortunate inci lent occurred. Ellerbeck as one of the offenders h id been singled out for a hair-cut. When he appeared on the ca np.n a id is attacked at-tacked by his classmates he dre .v a revolver re-volver and leveled it o.i the criwl following fol-lowing him with the statement th it there "were not enough students in the institution to clip his hair." For a . moment the affrighted students, as-; as-; touished by this sudden and unusual procedure of their irate classmate, recoiled re-coiled before the muzzle of the gun. ; I Rallying from the m imentary fear, one bolder than the rest, Clyde Woolley, j rushed in with the deadly weapon point-! point-! ed directly at his head. Warnings from j i the man behind the gun fell on deaf ears j I and he continued his mad rush at the j armed student. Ellerbeck at the critical i ' moment, just before Woolley had secured secur-ed a grip on his arm, turned and ran, ; across the campus shooting over his shoulder at the crowd. Of the four j 1 shots fired at random into the crowd by ! Ellerbeck one took effect, in the arm of I' Harry Hansen, one of the foremost pursuers. pur-suers. In h.s haste to get away from the excited crowd, Ellerbeck ran into the arms of Carl Shipp, who had taken i ' a detour and intercepted him in his I course. After a struggle in which P clothes were torn and more shots fired and with the assistance of some of the I crowd who were in at the caoture, I Eiiet beck was overcome. Without taking tak-ing him to the chair he was given a haircut on the spot of his capture and care was taken that he received the closest crop that has been dealt to any !of the offenders in the last week. It s was afterwards learned that the gun . was loaded with birdshot and the wound j in the arm of Hansen is not serious. In connection with the pranks of the j students at the University, President J. T. Kingsbury said: "My attention has recently been call-ed call-ed to the fact that a number of students have been interfered with by their classmates class-mates for alleged neglect in the whitewashing white-washing of the big letter on the hill. It is against the rules of the school for any student or students to interfere with the personal rights or liberties of any other student or students, and if apprehended, any student violating this rule will be diciplined." Hazing is a barbarous custom and many colleges, because of its serious results, are waging war against such practices. Hazing often results in serious complications that remain with j students for life. Limbs are broken ! and often thrown out of place to say ' nothing of the peeled noses and hard feelings that accompany such practices. ' I |
