Show IRE COMPLEXION OF NEXT CONGRESS IN THE HOUSE THE DEMOCRATS WILL HAVE A MAJORITY OF TWENTY-FOUR. In the Senate the Democratic Majority Ma-jority H?s Been Increased from Ten to Sixteen as Result of Recent Election. Washington. With complete rei .urns in hand from practically every . one of the 435 congressional districts in the United States, the Democrats and Republicans are subtantially agreed upon the complexion of the house of representatives in the sixty-fourth sixty-fourth congress, which will be convened con-vened by President Wilson within a few weeks to go on with the Democratic Demo-cratic program of legislation. The Democrats, according to their own figures, will have a clear majority ma-jority of twenty-four over all other parties in the house and a plurality of thirty-three over the Republicans. The line up of the house will be as follows: Democrats, 229; Republicans, Republi-cans, 196; Progressives, 7; Socialists, 1; Independent, 1. Democratic majority, major-ity, 24. In the senate, according to returns which are accepted by the national committees of both parties as being substantially accurate, the Democratic Demo-cratic majority has been increased from ten to sixteen, the upper house lining up as follows: Democrats, 56. Republicans, 39; Progressive, 1. Charles Curtis, Republican, is going back to the United States senate, after af-ter an absence of two years, to succeed suc-ceed Senator Joseph L. Bristow of Kansas, whom Curtis defeated for nomination in the primaries. Lawrence Y. Sherman, Republican, was re-elected to the United States senate from Illinois, defeating Roger C. Sullivan, his Democratic opponent, by 17,030 votes. Not only did the men and women voters of California bury state-wide prohibition by a majority that may reach close to 200,000, but they adopted adopt-ed a referendum amendment prohibiting prohibit-ing another vote on the question within with-in a period of eight years. Although the state of Arizona was voted dry in Tuesday's election, there was a question whether the prohibition pro-hibition amendment added to the constitution con-stitution was self-operative or would require an emergency act by the legislature leg-islature before becoming effective January 1. The official count probably will be required to settle the contest between Charles S. Thomas, Democrat, and Hubert Work, Republican, for United States senator from Colorado. The plurality of Boies Penrose, Republican, Re-publican, for re-election to the United States senate from Pennsylvania probably will be more than 250,000. Every county in Oregon gave a majority ma-jority in favor of state-wide prohibition. prohibi-tion. Woman suffrage was defeated Id North Dakota by about 10,000 votes. As neither the Progressives nor Socialists So-cialists cast 2 per cent of the total vote for governor in Rhode Islam they lose their standing as legal political polit-ical parties in this state. The Republicans Repub-licans and Democrats are now tht only parties entitled to nominate theii candidates through the caucus system. |
