Show QUARTERLY CONFERENCE j HELD AT CLEVELAND One of the best conference! ever held I in Emerv stake was enjoyed by a host of Saints from over the whole stake who, taking advantage of the unusually fine weather, made the trip to Cleveland. Cleve-land. Elder George F. Richards of the Quorum of apostles and Elder J. Golden Gold-en Kimball of the first presidency of seventies were present and gave excellent excel-lent talks in both regular and priesthood priest-hood meetings. SATURDAY MORNING The Saturday morning session of conference con-ference was begun with the singing of the hymn "Awake" by the choir and congregation, followed by prayer by Elder John P. Pearson, followed in turn by an anthem from the choir. Pres. Oveson bade his hearers welcome wel-come and expressed the hope that, inasmuch in-asmuch as the farm work, for the most part, is completed, a good attendance would be present to hear the words of faith and truth from the speakers in our midst. Reported that both the Sunday school and M. I. A. organizations organiza-tions are now taking up the work with - renewed vigor and both erganizations promise to do a remarkable work in the future. Speaking on the s.bject of monthly tithe-paying, he remarked that, inasmuch inas-much as the request has been made that our tithes should be paid monthly, we should all try to do this. The tithes for the nine months last past have increased in-creased several hundred dollare supposedly sup-posedly due to the adoption of the monthly payment plan. Concluding he testified to his thankfulness that we are living here in a land of peace, while the fatherland of many of us are dis-Vupted dis-Vupted by the terrific war raging -in -Europe. Bishops Tuft of Lawrence and Lar-en Lar-en of Cleveland reported their wards, . and the choir rendered an anthem. Pres. Kimball urged the importance of having the spirit of your calling both in religious and secular life, but . especially in the performance of religious re-ligious duties. He also spoke on faith. If you have no faith you have ho gifts. The man who has no faith in himself and in his fellow men has no faith in God. He related several remarkable instances of healing in which he had taken part. ' Elder Richards, also speaking on! faith, said until we reach pei f ection, I faith is necessary to both saints and others that our work may be more thorough. Faith, of all gifts of God, is to be encouraged and strengthened. If one has faith he will obey the laws of the gospel faithfulness to duties being be-ing commeasurate with the faith of the individual. He urged that meetings and conferences be strictly attended and that the books of God be studied thoroughly for the purpose of increasing increas-ing our faith. The morning meeting was brought to a close by the choir singing the hymn, "The Glorious Gospel Light." Prayer was offered by Bishop Brinkerhoff. SATURDAY AFTERNOON "Earth With Her Ten Thousand Flowers" was the opening hymn and prayer was offered by Elder Alex Jameson, followed by the choir singing an anthem. Pres. Alma G. Jewkes bore his testimony testi-mony and expressed the hope that all woula go on in the way the servants of the Lord have pointed out to them. Elder Einar Erickson related incidents bearing on his recent mission in Iceland where he labored some fourteen months. Elder Ivan Johnson, recently returned from a mission in the states, also spoke, bearing his testimony. Bishop Brinkerhoff spoke briefly of the condition of his ward and related mission experiences. Moroni Oveson rendered the solo, "Marguerita," accompanied by Miss Theora Crawford. Bishops Antone Nielson of Huntington Hunting-ton and Geo. H. Oviatt of Elmo reported report-ed their respective wards and Elder Peter E. Johnson, representing the 81st quorum of seventies, reported that quorum. Pres. Kimball, next speaking, spoke on general doctrine. There is no greater great-er field of labor before our people to- i day than to point to ways of more happiness. hap-piness. There is not the joy in service today that there was in years past. There is no faith without sacrifice. Brother Erick Erickson and the choir rendered the hymn, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Benediction was offered by Elder A. Anderson. SUNDAY MORNING Following the singing of "Oh Bright Sabbath Morning" and "O, Awake My Slumbering Minstrel" and prayer by Patriarch Larien a period was taken up with the regular Sabbath school exercises. Pres. A. E. Wall, speaking first, urged a steadier labor along the lines of our duties rather than the spasmodic energy of some. Commented on the peace existing ex-isting in our land today and urged his hearers to be ever thankful for such conditions. Prin. G. F. Hickman f the E. S. A. spoke, taking up the subject of habits and the relation of the same to character explaining the matter very thoroughly. He reported the Academy as being in excellent shape, more students being enrolled at this time than at tne same time of any other year and all being high school students. The choir sang the hymn, "God Made the World." Pres. Kimball gave a very forceful talk on habit and the everlasting harm ef forming bad ones, also urged the need of husbands thoroughly understanding understand-ing their wives that they may save them unnecessary steps and help and assist them, and of parents understanding their children and explaining little habits hab-its they may have to teachers and those who may have charge of them, that they might be better understood. He also urged a Detter work among the priesthood quorums, especially the seventies quorums. The choir and congregation sang "Oh My Father," and Elder Alonzo Rowley offered the benediction. SUNDAY AFTERNOON The Sunday afternoon services were begun with singing by tke choir and prayer by Elder U. E. Curti. Pres. A. E. Wall presented the names of general and stake authorities and the same were unanimously sustained in their positions. Prof. John G. McQuarrie, of the E. S. A., related some of the difficulties the church has overcome in the past and of the position of respect and trust it holds before the world today. The choir rendered the hymn, ''Though Deepning Trials." Pres. K mball, speaking again urged more faith throughout the church and related several instance of , prophetic fulfillment, and urged goo J works as j well at faith. Pres. Oveson concluded the conference confer-ence by thanking the saints for theirs kind hospitality and Choirster Richards and his choir for their music, i With the singing of the hymn, "Come, Come, Ye Saints'' and prayer by Bishop H.
