Ex- Pyotr Grigorenko said Thursday he considers the harsh prison terms recently imposed on two Ukrainian human rights activists to be a victory for the Soviet dissident movement. The general, who himself was deprived of his Soviet citizenship only last month while in the United States for med!cal treatment, decried the sentences imposed on Myroslav Marynovych, 28, and Mykola Matusevych, 31. "We nevertheless regard that victory is on our side, he said, speaking through an interpreter at a press conference W'e sympathize here. with our brothers, and we will continue to fight for their freedom. Marynovych and Matusevych, with General Grigorenko of the Ukrainian Helsinki monitoring group, were both sentenced to seven-yea- r prison terms and five years exile in a remote area of the Soviet Union on charges of engaging in propaganda. That group, similar to several others in the Soviet Union, was organized in 1976 to evaluate Soviet compliance with human rights provisions of the Helsinki accords. Grigorenko has sought political asylum in this country, with a court hearing on his application due in New York anti-Sovi- et next week. Without the out singling United States, Grigorenko was sharply critical of Western signers of the Helsinki Accords who, he said, have dosed their eyes to Sov let human rights violations in order to sup-x"the illusion of detente Such an attitude is what makes repression possible, he declared. Lawyer Convicted The documents were donated to the archives in 1969 and a Nixon lawyer was subsequently convicted of back-datin- g the deed of gift so they would be under a law which Congress repealed later that year. Nixons claim for a deduction for the value of the papers was rejected in 1974 but the statute of limitations had run out. Although he declared he would nevertheless pay the tax, there has been no record of him doing so. Nader Suit Attorney R. Stan Mor- tenson noted the Nader suit was forcing the na-- ? tional archives to defend, at taxpayer expense, its agreement with Nixon not to make the papers public before 1985.
