As a matter of fact, only a producer with great influ t ence on Miss MacLaine could vhave been optimistic enough o expect this unrepressed American gal to take a geisha orientation course, de vote a month to experimenta- tion with makeup and then spend three hours a day turning herself Into a rea i sonable facsimile of a Japa- ' v. nese. ,t Behind And It All The producer who accomplished all this had one unique advantage. He Is Miss MacLaine husband, Steve i - Miss MacLaine actually light-hearte- - d reasons. Yves Montand, Edward G. Strictly speaking, the Mac-- 1 1iine geisha was not Just a makeup problem, although fitting the right wig, wearying the contact lenses, pull-'ln- g the eyes into an Oriental slant and achieving the traditional geisha postures all t involved help from the make-u- p man. 'There were two problems 'hat the makeup department could only shrug its shoulders about The first In ttolved the fact that Shirley MacLaine is a gal who envoys her work. She likes to laugh heartily. l And when she laughed 'heartily In full geisha make- up she was apt to pop her Japanese eyes right back to 'the original Richmond, Va., Optics with which she was bom. If the contact lenses 'Stayed in place which was touch and go on, occasion there was imminent danger that the muslin tabs, used 'to achieve the slant-eyes- , would give way under the . train of Shirleys grin. The Ups and Downs The other difficulty was In - an entirely different area. ; Geishas sit very gracefully j on the Door, for long periods of time. Miss MacLaine was ' originally a dancer, and a good one, who gained star- - dom on the Broadway stage, ' so, being graceful posed no problem. However, what re-quired acting was to sit like ' a geisha without revealing ' ' T . ; her discomfort And then, of course, she had to learn to walk like a geisha; which took doing, too, but after the strain of sitting, it was a pleasure to f be on her feet First-Ru- n t ; . Tunnels Pose Piuxle , Difficulty In lighting the complex underground tunnels and the Inability to move bulky camera equipment through the narrow passages prevented the use of the real thing in all sewer scenes. However, art directors did such a realistic Job of recreating portions of the sewer on the Disney lot, that even workers In the actual d Paris system will be to detect the difference. Thick Paper, Plastic The Disney sewer ran about 450 feet and occupied one of the studio's largest soqnd stages. The pipes were made of thick paper and the elbows of plastic. Paint was then applied to give the proper grey metallic hue. Underground walls were created of screen mesh, .sawdust and plaster, with a plastic paint spray to give them the appearance of ancient granite. An elaborate filtering system circulated water through - the canals under foot. His Exit Hilarious As Fred MaeMurray crawls, climbs and wanders aimlessly through the intricate maze of imitation pipes, electrical conduits, gas lines and along narrow ledges over churning water, in an attempt to find his way out of the labyrinth, one of the most hilarious episodes of this production results.
