Show ! ' A IvHSjIOARY LETTER ! Jacksonville, Fla., May 9, 1913 Mr. and Mrs. O. Sorensea jr., C.slle-j C.slle-j dale, Utah, bi-ar Brother and Si.-ter: ' ! After to long a time I take pleasure in writing you a few lines. I have thought ! of you oiten, as I have, also, of many I other good friends in the west, but to 1 write to all would be almost impossible : so 1 have limited mj correspondence to a very few principally Sister Pea-S Pea-S cock and babies. . Nearly nineteen months have passed since I reached here and before I hi I been here four months I was given ihe responsibility of the largest miJ most, fruitful conference of it.o Southern stales mission. The Florida conferenci' comprises forty counties in Florida and tiiirtyumr counties of South Georgia. It extends lruui the Atlantic Co ist west to the Ai.akci.iet.ia River and fromthe Altamaiia Uiyer south to Key West. . We have saints scattered throughout the conference in almost every county, their number reaching to some over tnree thousand. To cover this broad field we hv had an average aver-age of about twenty two Eiders, most . of whom are not over twentythree 1 years of age . ' In 1912 our baptisms reached 192 and ; thus far this year (1913) we have mjre I baptisms than we ha 1 last year by the ! middle of August, in fact we have, thus far more than duubied the number in the same length oi time. . Opposition lis fast d:s ip.) u-i'K and frien is ace found in ;-.l. ) ai c. i. alters come inc.) j me alm si t.ady !:: u" for Elder?, j some of tr.i m t .u'.ujt ' ieae send tne I the Eiders, 1.. se ! a. tiu Eiders come i with tb," etc. 'ii:e harvest truly is great, bu the lau irers are few. We spend tie winters in Florida and , then, as the birds, we go back north in i the summer. At tins writing most of j the elders are nearing the Georgia line, and after t'-.e fir. t of June most of our work will be in south Georgia, j So far as the heat is concerned there is but little dilference, but Georgia is bet- j ter during: the summer for water and has less insects to contend with. This ! of course insures better health. I have covered the greater part of I the field in holding biaich conferences ! with the saints and elders. During the month of April I held fortyone meetings most of which were regular public meetings while some others were just baptismal services. Many of the meetings were in the open air which is hard.on the voice. I had to give up the singing but I managed to talk loud enough to bear my testimony to all wh i would listen and this was not a few. Twice we were unable to get halls to holj meetings in so we canvassed canvas-sed the towns and invited the people into the streets. Good crowds assembled, assem-bled, many of the peo;jle bringing chair or boxes with them for seats. The gem says "we'll find a way or make one," so the elders have demonstrated it in this conference and no doubt it is very annoying to Satan, when he thinks he has us headed off, to see us at work ; some place else or to hear our voieas 'declaring the principles of God from the street corners. I have enjoyed my labors just fme and while I feel that the people down here receive a great benelit from t e j elders, 1 think that rao one has reccivad j the benelit that. I have myself. I fie i the world in a different light; I see our people a blessed people jat not appreciating it as they should. I see ! more grandness and beauty in tne Gospel than ever before, and last but not, least is Utah the "Queen of the West." DigrcSri. iff just a little, let u.e say that 1 attended a picture show, t and for convenience to show the loca-! loca-! tion of the plot a man ,:HpeareO on thj j scene before me, lo! it was Utah wi h tne index hand resting upon Emery. ! Just think of it, away down her-, Utan placed before the people with the index hand upon Emery. Gan you imagine my feeimgr? For a numeiit 1 too.t a ! trip home. If I were on a "JJoosters club" now I would suv "Boys let us ' make this picture real." Beiore closing let me say a word a-I a-I bout Florida. 1 never experienced suclfa delightful v inter in my life as I the one'just clased. It cannot be de-' de-' scr bed except in the tuperlati . e. Tne East coast is a tourist section, the ; principal ciues being Jacksonville, St. : Augustine, Daytona, Miami, and Palm i Eeacn. I have visited some of there places and have foand beauty magni- j tied, especially at Day t ma. 'i lie ; r loridiun look 3 forward to the coming: of the rourists (tneir Yankee crop a . it is called) as a tanner '.a es to tne harvest of his ciop, because . l is upon ; them that he depends. Tne o;h;r side of the -story is woeiul. luis state has j been bcosted as a p. ace for the home : seeker aiat I venture that there aie ' more homeless in mis city alone than 1 I all Utah. Please tell tne home seekers for me if you meet any not to come to Fieri la without plenty of money, also not to buy without steing. I think I have said e utigh. If this letter interests OuJ and you think it would others, pass it on. If it is found i worthy of mention in the Progress 1 : have no objection. I s .iii it t rcu j with prayers and best wishes. j Your b. other in the gospel, 15. J. PEACOCK, flu Copeland St. |
