Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY AUGUST 23, 2000 Sports Cowboy seniors Lance Brown, Zach White, Josh Blasdell, Kyle Brunner night on the road against Moapa Valley at 7 p.m. Utah time. Coach Rod Quamberg, his coaching staff and the Kanab Cowboy football team are excited to get the 2000 season underway this Friday night in Nevada against the Moapa Valley Pirates. Leading the way for the Cowboys are senior ins Josh Blasdell, Lance Brown, Kyle Brunner, Matt Pepper and Zach White, along with seniors MorganMackelprang and James Narramore. For Kanab to have a good season, Coach Quamberg hopes the team maintains a positive attitude, improves every game and stays healthy. The turnout is a little thin this year, but the players he has, hes excited about. Offensively, junior Sam Noel I Aug. 25 Sept. 1 Sept. 8 and Matt Pepper are the captains of this year's Kanab Cowboy football squad. Their season gets started this Friday and sophomore J.R. Quamberg will be handling the quarterbacking duties. Noel ran the JV squad last year, while Quamberg was the freshman QB. Noel is recovering from a shoulder separation he suffered at the end of the baseball season this past spring. Fortunately, its his left shoulder. This past Monday was Noels first day in full pads. Both should see plenty of action in Fridays contest. Other expected starters include junior Andy McFadden at the fallback spot, backed up by sophomores Robert Hansen and Sammie Garcia. At the tailback position junior Tad Casebolt, sophomore Colt Nieman, senior James Narramore and junior Cowboy Football 2000 1 Kanab at Moapa Valley Millard at Kanab North Sevier at Kanab Kanab at South Sevier Kanab at Milford Sept. 1 5 Sept. 22 Sept. 29 Oct. 4 Parowan at Kanab Grand at Kanab (UEA) Oct. 13 Oct. 19 Kanab at Beaver , Enterprise at Kanab . Varsity games start at 7 p.m. 13 J David Geiger wall all see plenty of action. Blasdell and Brunner will man the wide receiver slots, with sophomores Mace Glazier and Blake Doss backing them up. Lance Brown is the tight end, with sophomore Josh Ramsay spelling him. On the line Pepper and White will be the tackles. Juniors Scott Brown and Ricky Thomas, along with sophomore Chris Aziz, will split time at guard. Senior Morgan Mackelprang will be the center with sophomore Josh Douglass spelling him. On the defensive side of the ball will be many of the same players. In defensive coachAllen Ortons probable startinglineup, youll see Pepper and Lance Brown at the ends with Mackelprang at one tackle. The other tackle spot is a toss-u- p between Scott Brown, Thomas and Aziz. The linebacking crew will have McFadden and Hansen inside with White and Casebolt on the outside. Geiger, Garcia and Niemann will also see plenty of action at backer. The deep secondary mil see Blasdell and .Brunner at the comers with speedster Glazier at safety. Heading into their first game, other than Noels sore shoulder, the only other injuries at press time were Blasdell with a sprained ankle and Geiger nurselbow. ing a hyper-extend- ed Coach Quamberg sees the first the running back who killed us two region games, both at home, last year. You can tell he really loves this bunch of guys, and he tells that to them almost every day in practice. Getting back to this Fridays Quamberg hopes to have a more balanced attack this year and he wants to rim the ball more. Quamberg thinks Beaver is the team to beat this year in Region 11, as they return most of their squad from last year, when they were a 2A state semifinalist. Millard, North and opener against Moapa, South Sevier will also be tough. Quamberg says, They have a Statewide, he thinks Beaver, lot of good athletes returning South Summit and Grantsville with plenty of speed, including will be ranked pretty high. |
