Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY APRIL 19, 2000 School Grade school science for fun and profit Melissa Rasmussen and her masked friends had a lot of fun with during the Tiny Tots program at Kanab City Library. What do you get when you combine 21 third grade students, two dozen fertilized chicken eggs, and an incubator? You get learning, fun, profit, and a prizewinning science fair project. This was the opportunity and experience had by students in Cynthia Myers third grade class at Fredonia Elementary School. With the assistance of Gregory Oakleaf, U.S. Forest Service employee and parent volunteer, Ms. Myers and her aide Tammy reading Heaton developed and guided students through a nontradi-tiona- l science activity, creating Tiny Tots reading program back by popular demand By Putt i Trulongo What do a very hungry caterpillar, Goldilocks and the three bears and Harold and the purple crayon have in common? If you said they all came to visit certain lucky youngsters at the Kanab City Library, youd be right. Of course, this was by way ofbook magic presented once again by Melissa Rasmussen. A Friends of the Library member, Melissa has recently completed part two of her Childrens Reading Program at the Kanab City Library. Offered to 22 tiny tots from our community this past winter from January 28 to March 24, Melissa created her program as a sort of head start to instilling in youngsters the love of reading, a topic near and dear to the Childhood Education Specialist. F ollowing a similar format ofher successful summer reading pro- gram, Melissa met with the prereg- tots on Friday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m., and presented seven different stories. They included The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Where the Wild Things Are, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Owl Moon, and The Snowy Day and Feelings. All ofthese books are part of the library's juvenile selection and were made available for checkout at the end of each class. In each session, she read the book to the children, encouraged a positive and enjoyable learning experience for all. Furthermore, the knowledge and experience gained by the students was demonstrated in a class science fair project which received grand prize at the Fredonia Elementary Science Fair in March. Using an incubator loaned to the class by Laura Whited, the students prepared and cared for two batches ofchicken eggs. The first batch of eggs was a learning experience for everyone involved. Mistakes were made and lessons learned as adults and students discovered the impor-thetance of temperature and hu- - dents then prepared graphs, lustrations and text to explain and accompany their project at the science fair, which was se- lected from all of the other classroom science fair projects as the best. Following the science fair, the baby chicks were sold, and the money was used to purchase science books and other materials for the third grade classroom. Now, cleaning the box and caring for the chicks was the daily routine. The hatchlings grew fast, providing a rich source of data for the classroom science fair project. As part of their experiment, students weighed and measured the chicks from various breeds. The students gathered, analyzed and charted their data.
