Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 13, 1939 Opinion Guest Ed Continued, from Page 4 notified of this option and understand the costs of remaining on the upgraded system. It was not practical to upgrade for fu- ture support and Y2K compliance if no one wanted to use it. At no time during the process explained above was Kane or any other county asked to ante up one penny. Options were identified, examined and explained to each of the counties affected. Whatever South Cen- tral does for one county we will certainly be expected to do for all. Both Sevier (who also provides E911 dispatch for Wayne and Piute Counties) and Iron Counties subsequently decided to go with US West for E911 service. Both have apparently done so while living within their 911 budget. Since Kane County residents are our member owners, expecting South Central to squarely shoulder additional costs of any kind does not solve the problem. Leveling accusations and placing blame does not solve the problem. We would prefer to continue to work with the county to find an acceptable solution. Letters to the Editor We are a community who is tryingto sell ourselves as a great place to visit and a peaceful and safe place in which to retire. And, what about all of the young families who are raising their children here? Wont we be giving a mixed message to those who are looking at our county as a place to live? What message are we sending to our children? Dont be fooled about the job issue: Please, please vote no on the bond issue on November 2. I have Lamar home now and he is on the road to recovery after his motorcycle accident. He will be on oxygen for several weeks yet because of the lung. By now . you may have heard that he has seven broken ribs on the left side and his left collar bone was broken in three places. The doctor described it as a puzzle prior to surgery, which was one week after the first surgery to remove his spleen. His physical therapist is encouraged at how much movement he does have with the left arm. He is able to walk around the house and each day Waddie Mitchell) were wonderful. Cowboy hats that is Dear Editor: The planningof the first Western Legends roundup went off without a Hitch, well, maybe just one; the thunderlightning storm Friday night was a hum dinger. Come to think of it, maybe that was planned too as a special effect for R W. Hamptons finale number How Great Thou Art. The entertainment, the cowboys and their poetry (especially Kanab Bar None Dear Editor: As a person who chose Kanab and Kane County as a place to retire in I am enraged that my adopted city is now contemplating becoming a part of the mentality of importing criminals for money. Good grief, there has got to be another way. Have we really investigated the cost of bringing our facility up to standards? How much will it really, cost? I bet not as much as the impact of a four million dollar bond issue. 5 Know what attracts readers to ads Prices in advertising draws ucts shown. readers. That was among the findings of an NAA study of run-o- f paper advertisingin dailies in 10 markets. Pollsters interviewed 2,000 readers for the Advertising Elements Study, the first such study in 25 years. Among the findings: Color works. Same size ads with full color were noted 20 more often than ads. They were read -- black-and-whi- te most 61 more often. (Read most in the survey meant at least half of the written material was read). Photos work. Ads with illus- trations scored higher than ads without. Ads with photographs boosted notice by 25 compared to ads with simple line art. Show the product. Ads that displayed a product in use were noted 25 more often and had 30 higher read most ratings compared to ads without prod Prices grab attention. Ads with 2 prices were noted and read far more than ads without prices. But, too much price clutter has diminishingretums. t. Size and location Full-pag- e ads were noted more often than quarter right page ads. But left-an- d hand pages got identical scores. Ads next to editorial and those adjacent to other ads had the same scores. Placing ads above or below the fotd made no difference, nor did placement within a section, unless the ad was the first large ad or it was on the back page. Pages with up to nine ads and as few as three scored the same. In five of the survey markets, readers were asked how they responded to ads they had seen. 65 said they visited the advertisers stores; 62 said they shopped for products or services featured in an ad. 10-1- matter-somewha- all-togeth- er Jailed Dear Editor: Who needs a bigjail? 40 bed, e 100 bed, 150 are all excessive for current needs in Kanab. We should not make a business of jailing prisoners in our beautiful city of Kanab, or its immediate outskirts. We should not jeopardize our prospects for Kanab as a major tourist destination by locating the burglars, rapist, murderers, violence-pron- e fringe members of our society in our midst. We should not allow this jail mentality within our community. When you invite a jail society to your area, you bring all sorts ofcriminals, and their families and associates to your streets and neighborhoods. We do have a choice! Vote No on the Bond issue on November 2. We must say no to any attempts to build a larger jail in Kane County. If I had my druthers, all the criminals would be doing hard labor for sentencing rather than having the benefit of living conditions better than many hardcitizens. working, bed!-thes- law-abidi- ng Wayne Canedy Kanab, Utah presents Nightly Dinner Specials Wednesday - Corned Beef & Cabbage - $7.95 Thursday - Spaghetti & Meatballs - $6.95 Friday - Deep Fried Cod - $7.95 (All You Can Eat) Saturday - Chicken Florentine - $7.95 ' Sunday - Gold Dust Chicken - $6.95 Monday - Meatloaf - $6.95 Tuesday - Paula's Homemade Chicken n Dumplings - $7.95 AIl specials include soup or salad bar and home-mad- e herb roll!
