Lock was raised in Kanab, played basketball and graduated from Kanab High School. He married Afton Mar Johnson May 15, 1933 (later divorced), and worked in Kanab until 1938. They then moved to Los Angeles, CA where he was a parts manager for Sears, Roebuck, and Co. During WWII, he was in the Army and served in Europe.
