Several fundraising activities have been scheduled for this week, including the hour long class competition where students of each class race to raise the most money to donate to the program. Last year, these Santas raised nearly $5000 for Kanab families, and the student body received a special volunteerism award from Governor Leavitt in May. Middle School site commit- tee report Bob Recently it was accurately ported in the SUN that there a discussion at the school meeting concerning test scores and that the Board was with the results from some of our schools. This is the and rightly so. It is the School Boards responsibility to review student progress in our schools. I am concerned how- ever, that based on this conver- sation, people may draw the wrong impression about the ef-fectiveness of our schools. First of all, a standardized test has several different components, but its main purpose is to show trends overtime. One cannot look at one years results, and draw any firm conclusions one way or the other as to the effectiveness of the school. Only by looking at scores over a period of a few days, one determine if a program is educationally sound. If the scores are improving over time, or if they are acceptable scores and holding their own over time, one can conclude that the pro- gram is good and moving in the right direction. On the contrary, if the scores are declining over time or if they are unacceptable and show no sign of improve- ment, one can conclude that a program needs upgrading. Trends over the last few years show that our strongest area is math and science. This doesnt mean that there isnt room for but scores are above the national average and have been for several years. Reading scores, in most schools, hover around the national aver- age of 50 percentile and basically show that there is room for im- re- - ta prisoners, stop by the KHS office between 2:00 and 3:00. District wide our biggest concern is in the Lan-cas- e guage category which consists of writing, composing, editing and stu-boar- read-concern- ed etc.Trendsoverthelastfewyears show this is an area which needs strengthening, My point is we need to make sure that these tests are used in the way they were designed and that is to show trends over time, It is not appropriate or sound to look at percentile scores for one year and draw conclusions on the effectiveness of our schools, As the Board ofEducation and educators, it is incumbent upon us that we do pay attention to our test results. They are impor-ca- n tant indicators of how well we are doing. We are in the process of looking at a system which will allow us to track our achieve-ar- e ment levels, as well as, other indicators of school success from year to year. Thus establishing some trends by which we can draw reliable conclusions about our programs, In conclusion, let me say that Kane School District, as a whole, compares very favorably to other districts in our state. This is not to say that we are good enough or that we are satisfied, but we do have a good educational tem in place and it is getting better. Our goal is continuous improvement over time. We are dedicated to this end and are striving to take the necessary steps which will allow us to reach nt, this goal. Kanab High School Drama presents: Alices Adventures in Wonderland.
