This is all well and good, but I think they've missed the truly abused segment of Americans. Parents. We work so dam hard at our job, and someone is continually telling us were doing it wrong! Right alter giving birth to our first son, I remember staring down at the helpless, wrinkled midget and feeling pretty overwhelmed. This little boy was going to depend on Dennis and I to love, provide and protect him, no matter what. Most moms and dads take their parenting responsibilities seriously. They read all the latest books and magazines, and possess all the newest gadgets. They fiercely parent their newborn, him,' overhiln feeding him, him. and They attempt to be the best par-ethey can be. Then all of a sudden someone comes along and changes the rules. "You dont have a blanket on that baby, do you? Hie baby's ifyou dress system will over-hehim too warm. You arent giving him that baby cereal, are you? Solid foods too early can cause him to develop food allergies. Just when you thought you were on the cutting edge of parenting, someone tells you that your blades gotten dull. over-dressi- ng over-protecti-ng over-everythingi- ng nt at All this parental rule-changi- ng doesn't get any better as they get older. When your child old tyrant and in is a two-yethe throes of a temper tantrum, its difficult to know how to respond. When my kids were that ar age, Id give them a gentle swat on the backside. Of course now I find out that I probably traumatized the poor lads forever. Little did I know I was squashing my tendencies. sons When the kid gets to school you find out in order to be a good parent, you should get involved in their education. For example, I found out more about John Quincy Adams then I thought humanly possible. (He was the sixth U.S. President, not to be confused with his father, John Adams, the second President; was bom in Braintree, which is now Quincy, Massachusetts, married Louisa Johnson, was short and stout, and had a shrill voice that broke when he became excited, yet he spoke so well he was nicknamed Did Man Eloquent.") Now after all that cramming, I find out some authority has decided parents shouldn spend much time helping with homework because the kids will never learn to become self reliant about doing something they are ultimately responsible for. As your kids get older, they become more independent, both in school and out. Its part of the natural order of things. Ive always figured that's why God made puberty, the time when kids are especially obnoxious and hard-headeHe wanted to make it easier for parents to let go. Parents back off when their kids get into middle and high school, because we sense that they're beginning to need a little space. Guess what? Experts now say parents should be more actively involved in a kids teenage years. Face it parents, we cant win. I say we form a union. self-expressi- 7 National Medical Laboratory Week The Lab Week theme this year ment, cardiology, nephrology, is Laboratory Professionals: endocrinology, neurology and Your Partners For Good Health. immune disorders.
