Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion 4 WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 22, 1895 Dixie Speaks After an emotional November 14 public hearing, the Kanab City Council voted 2 to defeat a motion to create a special improvement district. The district, which would be funded by special assessment, was to make improvements such as curb, gutter, street repair and sidewalks in a certain designated area of town. The issue of the district's creation, and the accompanying special assessment to homeowners in the area, has been heated and ongoing. Several council members, along with the city manager, put a lot of time into getting the figures together and researching the project. I'm sure they were disappointed by the council's narrow defeat of the measure. Irregardless of the outcome, they should be commended for their hard work. all City improvements are going to cost money-w- e need to accept that. If we want certain perks, we must raise taxes or pay special assessments. None of these things are going to be free or happen magically. But I left the public hearing feeling that the majority of people actually do want curbs, gutters and sidewalks, they just felt that the cost was prohibitive. Most of them said that they were willing to pay for the needed items, just not so much. The special assessment was extremely high. Have other funding options been explored? What about selecting a section of town which didn't house so many elderly people on fixed incomes? How about seeking grant money, and looking into what things could be done locally with unemployed workers? We encourage the City Council, if they still have the stamina, not to drop the curb, sidewalk and gutter issue. 3-- Letters to the Editor What is your opinion ?
