But, as with all learning, repetition one way or another, is one key to gaining an understanding of whatever knowledge it may be we are seeking. Alas, even with repetition, some us never quite get it! Usually because the knowledge isnt applied. Nevertheless here goes anyway! Ifyou are interested in provid- ing your growing plants with the very best fertilizer possible for the least money, plan to make use of all the waste our yards, homes and gardens supply us with by composting it! For instance, there is grass cuttings, prunings from the shrubs that have already blossomed. Weeds, young and green that are being cut or pulled. Most everyone reads one newspaper a day. Compost only black and white. Meals are prepared and eaten with their resulting scraps. Never put meat, bones or fat in the compost pile. But stale styrofoam. Fruit and vegetables trimmings, coffee grounds and filters, tea leaves, used paper towels and napkins. Use thinnings from garden rows and those vegetables past their prime should be pulled, chopped and put in the pile, if not diseased. Never leave them to dry up where they grew, to harbor pests. Any old hay or straw and theres gold to be added to the pile from last falls bagged leaves. The answer as to manure being a necessary ingredient to making compost is no! Much e compost has no manure whatsoever. But if available by all means use it in the pile. No dog or cat feces however. A bonus with using manure is, if the pile generates the intended intense heat, weed seeds are burned and cause no problem as when manure is spread over the garden and tilled in. Next week well pursue the question of the hows, wheres, and whys of composting. well-mad- American Legion District 7 convention The American Legion & Auxiliary District convention was held in St. George on May 6.
