Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MAY 17, 1995 3 Matson hired as economic development consultant By Richard Negus Former Kaibab Forest Products Executive Jim Matson, who has done yeoman work in the community since his retirement, came to the commission with a proposal to work as a economic development consultant. Matson explained that he is proposing to consult to Kane County, and the cities of Kanab and Fredonia under three separate agreements with a unified purpose. He would be continuing the work started by Peter Solie who was employed by UAAT, the Utah Arizona Action team, which was funded by a Forest Service grant. Matsons written proposal started with this mission stateTo serve as Kane Countys Economic Develop- ment- ment Professional ...the primary goal is to develop and refine the countys economic and strategic plan in consultation with its associated communities. He divided the plan into two phases. Phase one will cover the fiscal year from July 1, 1995, to carry out the tasks outlined in a proposal to the State of Utah under the local economic development initiative. Kane County and Kanab City are requesting a grant of $20,000 with an equal share in the matching funds. Under the UAAT program with the city of Fredonia, Matson will submit a proposal to restore the availability of natural resources from the National Forests for economic development in other areas of Arizona and Southern Utah. A grant of $15,000 from the Forest Service with a match of $5,000 from Fredonia is being considered. Phase two deals with housekeeping matters relevant to funds allocated by the former entity including $4,320 granted to Kane County. As the use of this money would entail the match of $4,600 from Kane County, the commission voted to return these funds to the state in order to maintain our credibility for future requests. The commission voted to accept Matsons proposal to act as economic development consultant and look forward to a long and prosperous relationship. (Editors note) Since this meeting, Matson has obtained the approval of the cities of Kanab and Fredonia. US West has divided Kane County, with the result being that Big Water and Church Wells are local to Page. 911 calls are answered by Page Police Department dispatch. At a recent Church Wells meeting with half of their community present, it was determined that it would be to their benefit if this arrangement continued. County coordinator Dave Owens asked the commission to formalize the agreement, since Church Wells is an unincorporated part of the county. The commission voted to do this. Russell and Scott Johnson have volunteered to do the signage work in conjunction with the Church Wells water board who will do the house numbering. The two young men will do the work under the aegis of Boy Scouts as an Eagle Scout Project. The Page system is expected to be on line in about 16 months. Meadow View Heights Mike Kenner asked the commission to accept amendments to this Cedar Mountain subdivision for plat C. The commission referred this matter to the county planning commission and subject to its recommendation, a public hearing could be held June 12.
