Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS News WEDNESDAY MAY 17, ieS 2 Council hears BLM plans for Vermillion Cliffs Highway By Richard Negus BLM rep Marcie Demillion outlined plans at the Kanab City Councils May 9 meeting for a joint government private part- nership to develop the Vermillion Cliffs Highway. Demillion told the council that plans were underway to develop information and interpretive sites along Highway 89 from Page to Kanab, 89A from Page via Marble Canyon and House Rock Valley to Fredonia, and fromFredonia to St George along 389.The first phase cost would be under $25,000, mainly for interpretive boards to be placed at points such as the Paria Movie site, Shinarump Cliffs and Arizona Strip scenic pullout. Funding will come from the BLM, Forest Service, National Park Service, ADOT, UDOT and some private sources. Demillion will update the Kanab Council on project progress. Jim Matson gave the city council his economic development proposal. He stressed Kanabs needs to continue an aggressive economic development program. Matson outlined his role as consultant (described in more detail in the account of the county commission meeting). The council voted unanimously to join the project with Matson as the economic development consultant for the city of Kanab. Cloyd Chamberlin requested a zone change on his property south of 89A from Agricultural to Manufacturing. The legal requirement is that a public hearing be held and with little discussion and no one in oppos- postponed as Dale Clarkson said the necessary documents were not yet ready, the matter was tabled. Jerry Glover put the case to the council that since he was only moving four blocks and since his present home would be demolished and turned into a parking lot, he should be exempt from paying an additional impact fee for his new home. After some deliberation, the council voted to charge Glover the new fees, for although he made a good case they felt that the impact ordinance should be enforced regardless of any extenuating circumstance. The appointment of a library board member was tabled for more study at the request of council member Roger Holland. Charles Leavitt was appointed the seventh beautification committee member.
