Show Souvenir Edition The Kanab Area Vacation Guide 22 Come & lb awed at Asagel Canajoin By Dixie Brunner The red rock cliffs cut a stark contrast against the azure Utah sky. The jagged peaks of the vermillion mountains guard nobly over peacefully-meanderin- g Kanab Creek, and the lush green valley carpeting the canyon floor. An overoverwhelming reverence falls over visitors, as they observe the incredible, pristine canyons beauty. Lips hush to silence as an inexplicable feeling comes over you, that youre entering a sacred place. Historic Angel Canyon has to the recently been public. Tours offer the public a trip through time, giving one the feeling of being in a veiy special place. Many feel Angel Canyon is a re-open- ed spiritual and sacred place, says tour director Cyrus Mejia. You cannot help but feel awed when you come here. Angel Canyon has awed visitors for thousands of years. The Anasazi Indians were early canyon visitors. Anasazi, (meaning the ones who came before) inhabited the Navajo Sandstone cliffs over 1,000 years ago. They built pueblos and lived a productive life in the canyon. The early Anasazi culture was largely agricultural. The people learned through trial and error what crops would grow on the sandy canyon floor. And then something inexplicable happened, causing the Anasazi to suddenly abandon their homes and villages. Archaeologists suggest a drought may have set in and the land could no longer support the people. The Anasazi left Angel Canyon, but their presence is still felt today. One tour stop shows an actual Anasazi storage cave, while another shows writings and cave paintings. If you allow your mind to wonder as you gaze upon the green canyon floor below, you can almost imagine the life of the Anasazi, living in harmony with their remarkable surroundings. In the 19th century, Angel Canyon became a Mormon homesteading and ranching sight. Visitors can view part of an origi- nal 100 year-ol- d homestead and Crocodile Lake, an underground lake that was used by early settlers for perishable foods storage. But Angel Canyons history isnt just one of quiet, peaceful existence. Daring cowboys have pursued outlaws, courageous Indians have fought for their homeland and a million dollar man have performed remarkable feats, all while in Angel Canyon. To name drop for a minute, a few famous canyon visitors have been an outlaw named Josie Wales, an Arabian sheik and a man, yes a Boone. BIG The canyon was set location for over 20 major TV shows and motion pictures such as: Lone Ranger, Rin Tin Tin, How The West Was Won, Death Valley, McKennas Gold and the Six Million Dollar Man. In the 70s, bus tours were taken out to the canyon to observe movie sets and man-Dani- el enjoy the canyons atmosphere With the gradual demise of remote filming, the canyon took yet another historic turn. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, (now the largest animal sanctuary in the world) purchased the property. Proceeds from the recently tour business, benefit the animals. Best Friends have been excellent no-ki- ll re-open- ed canyon caretakers, respecting its Indian heritage, as well as the canyons intrinsic beauty. The tour stops at Angels Landing, a large natural dome cave that features a large lawn, tall trees and a natural spring fountain, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch or campfire cookout. If you take the jeep tour, you may get a rare view of the underground lake, an Anasazi food storage place, and a wall covered with their ancient hand prints. Angel Canyon Tours offer hiking tours, in which you can see unique flora and fauna, and wildlife tours, where you can focus your attention on golden eagles, bobcats, coyotes and lizards. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary may also be visited by appointment. At any given time, the sanctuary houses over 1500 abused, abandoned or neglected dogs, cats and other animals. Spend some time in Angel Canyon. Even a few hours can renew your spirit, with the canyons magic offering a peaceful, healing atmosphere. Come visit Angel Canyon and be awed. FrostoP 31!
