After six months of hardship, the courageous pioneers arrived at Bluff City on April 6, 1880. No one died, no one suffered any serious accidents, and three babies were bom. The brave pioneers had traveled many miles over which a wagon had never gone before. Hole-in-the-Ro- is located 66 ck miles from Escalante. There are many side roads leading to picturesque canyons and arches. Its worth the time to travel the route of those determined Mormon pioneers, and gaze in disbelief at the Hole. If you plan to drive to Hole in the Rock, leave your wagon drive vehicles behind, four-whe- el are advisable. How do I get there from Kanab? Take Highway 89 north out of Kanab. Go through Mt. Carmel, Orderville, Glendale and Hatch. Turn right on Highway 12, which is the Bryce Canyon turnoff. Drive through Tropic, Cannonville and Escalante and turn right four miles past Escalante on Road. This gravel road is 50 miles drive long and pretty rough, so a vehicle is highly recommended.
