Show it-. t- - Sports SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS im Buffs drop heartbreaker in region final OT 67-6- 1 Just as the Lady Buffs did one week earlier in the girls state championship game, the Valley High boys basketball team lost an exciting Region 15 championship game to Enterprise 67-6- 1 in overtime. The Buffaloes reached the championship game by beating Escalante 8 in the semifinals. 51-4- In the championship, Valley came back from a five point Enterprise lead with less than a minute to go. Tony Baird scored on a rebound basket to cut the Wolves lead to 58-5- 5 with 30 seconds left. After a missed free throw by Enterprise, the Buffs got the ball in Baird's hands for the final shot. He sank a trey with seven seconds left to knot the score at 58-5It 8. was all Enterprise in the extra period, as they outscored the Buffs 3 to take the region crown and go to the state tourney as the 1 seed. Fourth ranked Valley surprised everyone but themselves and go to state as the 2 seed. Baird ended up with 26 points to lead the Buffs. Jared Burrows added 10. In the semifinal match with Escalante, the Buffaloes jumped out to 12-- 0 lead. Escalante fought back to trail by only three 37-3- 4 heading into the final period. The game was tied at 48-4- 8 with 17 seconds remaining when Baird hit a 10 foot jumper to give Valley the lead and the game. The fundraiser for the KHS wrestling team is in full throttle and your last chance to buy chances will be this weekend, Feb. 23, 24 & 25. The drawing will take place during halftime of the Region 13 Basketball Championship on Saturday, Feb. 25. The winner may have to wait a few days before it is in their hands, because of an unexpected reorder of another jersey. Members of the Kanab were notified last week of a 12 year old boy that was in very poor condition as a result of an accident here in Kanab about two months ago. Bud Barnes, the boys grandfather, wanted to donate $1000 to the wrestling pro I: wres-tlingtea- m gram so that he could give the jersey to his grandson Jason. Mr. Barnes hopes that the jersey will in some way help his grandsons progress toward recovery. The wrestlingteam decided that they wanted Jason to have the jersey before an upcoming operation. So the team took their picture with thejersey, wrote Jason a note, sent him a Kanab wrestling sweatshirt, and sent the jersey to him in hopes that it will help. The wrestlers would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. They also want to assure the winner that another official autographed jersey has been ordered and will be in their possession as soon as it is received. The wrestling team would also like to thank everyone for their support. Neither team enjoyed more than a three or four point 7. advantage, as the lead seesawed back and forth, until the last few minutes of the game. Bucky Orton led the Cowboys with 30 points, in- cluding four treys. Brant Brown netted 15 and Casey Glover added 14. The freshman team came out on top in their game, 36-3- winning by 20 points. The Cowboys ended the regular season with a 8 rer gion record, tied with San Juan and Grand for fourth place. In a coin flip, Kanab will enter the Region 13 Tournament seeded 4, San Juan 5 and Grand 6. Beaver stays the 1 seed, withNorth Sevier 2 and South Sevier 3. McKenzie Chamberlain led the way with 16 points, including 12 in the final quarter. Tiffany Christensen added four. Mizuno was led by Casey Daley with nine points. Alicia Button netted six and Shemra McDonald added three. BK 30, PF Flyers 10 Ashleigh Chamberlain scored 14 points to lead the British Knights to an easy win over PF Melanie Dalton Flyers 30-1added eight points and dished out 10 assists. Marin Jensen and Kari Stirland each netted four. Jenni Niemann led the Flyers with four points. BK 34, Mizuno 15 The British Knights heighth was too much for Mizuno to handle as they came out on top 34-1Ashleigh Chamberlain scorched the nets for 20 points to pace the Knights.
