Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 22, 1S35 Dixie Speaks I A small citizens group met with Governor Leavitt last Friday in the St. George Dixie Center to visit with him about the sorry state of Kane County economics. The presentation was rushed, in that the head statesman was 35 minutes late. Jobs were presented as the greatest area concern. Participants told of the devastating effect of the Kaibab Forest Products closure, Areas of concern such as Endangered Species Act, wilderness, forest management, mining permits, travel industry and other issues were also discussed. The governor asked participants what they felt the state could do to assist Kane County in their troubles. Governor Leavitt is a champion of states rights. Nationally, he has been an outspoken advocate of this government management style. My impression is that the governor further believes that individual counties should also govern and help themselves, i.e., we're probably not going to get much help from the state. This news probably wasn't what any of us wanted to hear. When you feel like you're drowning, it'd be nice to have someone throw you a life preserver. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen. The governor asked meeting attendees whether we had assessed our situation. He questioned whether we had scrutinized our assets and liabilities, and what our area had to offer new businesses considering locating here. We need to diligently seek new businesses to locate in our area. We need to support, not hinder, Peter Solie, the qualified economic director we hired a year ago, understanding that his job isn't one that produces overnight results. usually makes people stronger. When we truly understand that God helps those who help themselves, we can get to work. The economic crisis that we are experiencing could be a turning point, a catalyst, for a future that could be quite exciting. But for now, we all need to get to work. well-plann- ed Fre-don- ia Self-relian- ce ure out who the caller is. child dashed through the inside I dont know why this peculiar door of the library (a few steps habit is so common here (Ive no- ahead of me to reah the potty) ticed it more here than anywhere to face an plummet of else Ive lived), but it is impolite stairs without warning, I can and annoying.
