Show Community SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 22, 1895 Kanab Eye Clinic Domestic Blitz celebrates By Dixie Brunner 20th year Child engineering --you Dr. Phillip R. Andrus, Kanabs only eye doctor, has been coming to Kanab for over twenty years, helping the people of this town with their vision, eyecare want em your way? Burger King isnt the only place where you can have it your you can even get kids made to order these days! I learned this fascinating tid- bit by reading an article in La- Home Journal about ge- nius sperm banks. The storys gist is that 15 years ago a multimillionaire named Klark Graham, opened The Repository for Germinal Choice, in Escondido, Califor- nia. (At first, I thought what a stupid idea. Because after all, who wants germs, and why would I go to a repository to get them anyway?) Graham was a devotee of eu- a scientific term for im- proving societys gene pool by encouraging gifted people to bear more children. In the book he entitled, The Future of . Man, Graham said that every intelligent couple should have at least three children. Any less would impoverish the human gene pool, he wote. To accomplish his gene pool improvement project, Graham opened up the repository which offered sperm from bona fide geniuses. And I mean he took it seriously. In the beginning, Gra- ham only allowed Nobel prize winners to donate their jewels, That apparently didnt work, however. There was a slight Nobel Prize win- problem-th- e ners were all old and didnt have very athletic... well, you get my drift. So since Graham couldnt get much action with his Nobel prize winner theory, he opened his repository up to just plain, old geniuses. To me theyre missing the whole point. I think that if par-waents were given the opportunity y, to engineer a child, intelligence, while being a desired factor, would not be the highest prior-die- s ity. Dr. Brunner, addresses lab assistant, I noticed that youre adding an unusual genetic acteristic to that chromosome, what is it mathematic ability, reasoning intellect, what is it that you think is essential to a future child? ; Uh, never mind. Go clean some test tubes or something. No, Im curious as to what characteristic you believe is portant in a child. Housecleaning. Excuse me? Im adding the inherent sire to be responsible around the house. If I were engineering a kid, sure Id want himher to be smart, but the really important characteristic would be to make sure they kept their rooms clean... without beingtold. Think of how valuable this technology would be if you could program your kid to share innately, and not be loud in Church. I cant even imagine what the research would be worth, if they could fix it so offspring would never have a snotty nose, messy diapers or make loud comments about char-Robe- rt ing people heavy in common sense here. The whole Repository theory opened up a huge controversy, igniting a nationwide debate over the importance of nature (herditary genetics) versus nur- ture (parental and environmental upbringing.) , , ....... Ive known a number of genius men who really didnt have a clue about real life. Graham could be encouraging smart men to do whatever it is they do when they give a sperm donation, and potentially be fathering a generation of idiots. Talking about impoverishing a gene pool-Iv- e spent a lot of time in University think tanks, and we arent talk- and eyewear needs. Dr. Andrus graduated from Pacific University in 1974 with high honors. He and his wife DawnEtta are parents of eight children and five grandchildren.
