Show os. i SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, March 3, 1S33 - Pzgt Fear Valley Girls Take Third at State by Jana McMullin Coach Ferril Heaton and his Valley High girls basketball team returned from their trip to the State Tournament at South Summit High School with a feeling of pride and accomplishment after finishing third in a field of sixteen teams. In their opening contest the Buffaloes went up against the g South Sumit girls, the number two team from Region 11. Against the taller Wildcats the Valley team held the lead throughout the game in spite of some hot outside shooting by South Summit. Excellent floor play and good shooting were key factors in Valley's margin, Scoring for Valley: Holly Heaton, 16; Tonya Brinkerhoff, IS; Joan Brinkerhoff, 12; Gwen Crosby, 11; and Jana McMullin, 6. Against Altamont. Valley's second opponent, the first quarter had little scoring, as With two Altamont led, Valley players, Joan Brinkerhoff and Jana McMullin, in early foul trouble. Coach Heaton substituted Deanna Rust and Wendy Crosby, two freshmen, who promptly ignited a blistering attack, which eventually sank the Altamont ship by a score of hothe-standin- ten-poi- 60-5- 6-- 52-3- Once again, excellent passing and shooting did the trick for Valley. Holly Heaton again led the scoring for Valley with 14 points, closely followed by Deanna Rust with 12. Other scorers for Valley were Tonya Brinkerhoff and Wendy Crosby with 9 each and Gwen Crosby with 8. In the semi-fingame against undefeated Enterprise the Valley was presented opportunity to avenge two earlier defeats at the hands of the Wolves. However, Valley's shooting went sour, and with few rebounds against the much taller Wolves, Valley soon found themselves well behind. The Buffaloes made one serious run at Enterprise in the fourth quarter, but ran out of gas, finally falling by a substantial margin, 48-2for Valley was scorer Leading Joan Brinkefhoff with 7 points. Others scoring were Heaton, 6; Tonya Holly Brinkerhoff, 5; Deanna Rust Larriettes Prepare For Region Competition and Jana McMullin, 4 each; Wendy Crosby, 2; and Gwen Crosby, 1. Smarting from their loss to Enterprise, Valley was determined not to taste defeat in their final of the year against Piute, the game to determine third place in State. Piute and Enterprise were the only two teams to defeat Valley this season. With this in mind, the Buffaloes played for keeps. They led all the way with the exception of the late fourth quarter tie and went on to earn third place as they defeated Joan the Thunderbirds, Brinkerhoff led the scoring chase with 13 points. She was followed by Holly Heaton, 10; Tonya Brinkerhoff and Jana McMullin. 8 apiece; and Gwne Crosby with 3. Many observers at the tournament commented that Valley had the most fundamentally sound team in the tournament, with a lack of height the only factor between them and the championship. North Sevier earned their third straight crown, taking the championship game from previously undefeated Enterprise, 44-4With the two Brinkerhoff girls as the only seniors on Valleys team, Coach Heaton will have a good nucleus for next years team. However, the main shortcoming of the Buffaloes, a lack of height, will still plague them unless someone has a growth spurt over the next few months. Valleys overall record for the year was 13 wins, 4 loses, their best season mark since beginning girls' basketball. They look forward to an even better year next year. 42-3- Darrel Beattie KHS Wrestler Takes 1st Jfl fYeeStvle Darrel Beattie, a 15 year old KHS student, earlier this year took 3rd at the Utah State High School 1A wrestling tournament. a in Darrel competed freestyle wrestling coaches assiciation, held at Pleasant Grove high school on Saturday, Feb. 26.
