Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Thursday, March 26, 1381 - Pago Threa SPORTS Welcome Home Buffs "Just wait until were of the bus to waiting fans, and dozens of the Seniors. Were going to take State." This youthful promise made when they were in the eighth grade by the boys in the class of 81 came true last week as the Valley Buffaloes won the State Gass Championship, and a large crowd of supporters gathered at the school in Orderville Sunday to express their approval. Sirens blaring and lights flashing, the police and ambulance escort announced arrival decorated cars joined the procession as they wended their way through gaily decorated Long Valley past signs, yellow ribbons, orange and black streamers, and cheering friends. At a short reception, Princiand pal Richard McMullin Coach Jim Hoyt spoke briefly and called on the team members for response. The milling crowd snapped pictures and expressed good wishes to the sound of remarks about a "once in a lifetime event. According to Joseph Bolan-deit has taken Valley 55 years to achieve this victory. The first basketball team to r, enter competition for the Buffaloes played in 1924 against such teams as Dixie, Cedar City and Panguitch, among others, an almost impossible amount of traveling in those days. Team members included Henry Car-rol- l, LaMar Chamberlain, Lynn Esplin, Howard Stevens and Arlos Crofts. The team of 1925 added to these the names of Verdell Lamb, Jim Holgate, and Joe Reese. The roster of players since then includes such illustrious names as Sandy Jorgensen and Duane Esplin, among others. Many of those first team members are gone now, but it was almost possible, in Orderville Sunday, to imagine that they, too, were cheering the accomplishment of the Valley Buffaloes of 1981, State Basketball Champions. BITS 'n PIECES by Gene Drake Brett The first time is often the sweetest so it should be a week to savor for Valley High ! It would be unfair to close without mentioning the fine campaign the Kanab junior varsity had. The young Cowmark and boys posted a 17-showed they could really play the game. The Sophomore tandem of Eric Brown and Weston Huntington led the scoring parade with averages in the double figures, but numerous players were instrumental in the Cowboys success. One of the better methods for the average gardener, if a greenhouse is not available, is that of a cold or hot frame which occupies little space and can be moved or stored if desired," said E. Arlo Richardson, State Department of Agriculture. As there is excellent information to be found in many gardening books, bulletins and articles, the actual construction of the frames, will not be discussed, but other considerations for the frames will be pointed out. Richardson said, "While 1 Vz miles So. The Cowboys finished up with an 18-record and improved as much during the season as any team in recent memory. Hats off to Coach Hamblin and his cagers for a great year. students and townspeople. Jim Hoyt and his crew came home from Provo with "Number One in state stamped in the history books. The Buffaloes had a couple of close ones (especially the Monticello win), but in the end they proved to be the only club who could post four big wins on successive days. If my memory serves me correctly. Coach Hoyt was a member of the Valley team which had achieved the best previous finish in state play. Jim is a fine coach and a gentleman. He deserves the success he and his team have achieved this season. Other than the coach and team, you have to be happiest for Jim Glover and the other Valley "stalwarts" who have put in untold hours and waited many years for that first state Kanab High School it it ir library News the cooperated very a rainy, cool by the time the Turkey Shoot started at 1:00 P.M., the sun was out and we had a beautiful afternoon. Do you ever stop to think how much in actual savings your library card means to you and the rest of your family? Books are becoming more expensive all the time and it is not unusual for them to cost ten dollars or more. Last year our circulation records showed that each member of families averaged ten books per person. At that rate the library saved the expenditure of quite a lot of money per family. These figures did not include the large number of books we secured for our patrons through the interlibrary loan, nor did it include the census microfilms we ordered for persons working on genealogy. If materials are returned on time there is no charge. There is a fine of three cents per day for overdue Fre-doni- books. Library cards are free.
