It was also refreshing to hear that the Kanab Irrigation Company is looking at bold, new progressive ways to develop and conserve local water resources. Then, again, it was refreshing, almost to the point of ecstasy, to see the two: Kanab City and the Kanab Irrigation Company, talking together about the Thats why it -- Brown, publisher and editor. The Master Plan Committee is looking at future population projections and considering what will need to be done to furnish water for the anticipated growth. New wells, water lines and purification are being looked at to bring the present culinary water system to a point that the area may grow in the coming years. On the other hand, the Irrigation Company is looking at better ways of storing, transporting, conserving and distributing irrigation water to its users and are even looking at the possibilities of a pressurized system. They certainly are not the pioneers in this phase of irrigation water development, so it stands to reason that it is possible and certainly worth consideration. . Weve yet to hear the rationale for such seeming inconsistency and cant conceive of any justification. Not that we oppose the dairy price support freeze since this is a move that can be defended as the federal government tightens its budgetary belt. But to exclude tobacco subsidies simply extends a paradox which has long suffered from lack of reason. The government on one hand, after determing that smoking is harmful to health, required a warning to this effect be printed on cigarette packages. But, at the same time, it continues to support tobacco as a crop. is EDITORIAL SHORTS AN OPEN LETTERTOTHE PRESIDENT: g Rannie, , LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor: Girl Scouts Hold Awards Court pot-luc- principal crop in the U.S. Southeast. Heavy financial repurcussions could be expected with a sudden termination of price supports. However, an announced phaseout is not an unreasonable approach. Senator Jake Gam points out that actual federal expenditures for the tobacco support program are minimal compared to the dairy program, but argues that cuts should still be made. And then he says in a recent news release: In our effort to bring the budget under control, we need to look at every program and make cuts wherever we can. For me, this year's round robin was especially exciting. Not only did Kanab bring home the region trophy, but they brought home the sportsmanship award as well. Athletes, coaches, students and parents should realize that sportsmanship is a very important aspect of high school athletics. We need to learn to accept bad calls made by the officials. When asked about allegations by Palmer concerning the granting of franchises to UP&L by the cities involved. White said the company would deal with that when necessary. Palmer has said in past correspondence that the cities, if UP&L were granted the right to buy the system, would not grant the franchises, thus making it illegal for the company to operate. White pointed out that the franchises currently owned by CPN would be sold to UP&L as part of the purchase agreement. As these expired, he said, the company would have to deal with each municipality individually. Jay Gardner, UP&L Tellur-id- e Division manager, noted further that he had been in contact with several area mayors and that they had not expressed such an opinion to him. When asked about why UP&L"hadiiot responded to the many charges leveled against the company since the PSC hearings ended in October, White said that he didnt feel that the issue before the PSC should be decided outside of the regular hearings. "We feel that the forum for deciding that is the PSC, he said. We dont think it ought to be tried and decided in the press. Freeze Dairy Supports But Subsidize Tobacco?
