Show THE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT Brian Vaughn. likes to c own aroun By MICHELLE CLEGG JOURNAL ARTS EDITOR Brian Vaughn describes himself as clown (probably Bozo, if he had to choose one). "I like to clown around," he said. In high school back in Scottsdale, Ariz., he was known as the class clown. But just because Vaughn likes to have fun, doesn't mean he's not dedicated. In fact, he just completed the summer as an actor for the Utah Shakespearean Festival. That's quite an accomplishment for someone who just three years ago was in the Greenshow . "I think I was the only undergrad in the company, he said. If you saw the Fe·stival this year, you may have recognized Va ughn in several productions. He played Costard m Love Labours Lost and Herr Schwarz in A Flea in Her Ear. Vaughn did so well in his parts that the Festival rewarded him. He received the Michael and Tan Finlayson Actrng Award. The award is given to a returning compan y member who shows growth in his or her acting. "It seemed like they enjoyed my work," he said. In addition to the acting, he conducted backstage tours and high school acting workshops. Vaughn had many positive experiences this summer. "I really enjoyed working with the best." He said they gave him a lot of advice and help. He enjoyed his acting job so much, he hopes to return next year. "That way I could have two positive summers under my belt." The only thing Va ughn complained about were the day performances. "Sometimes it's hard to get up for a matinee, especially when there are only 20 or so members in the audience." Once summer is over, he returns to entertaining crowds in SUU theatre productions. Last year, he played in Dancing at Lughnas a, Broadway Bound and Me and My Giel. After Vaughn graduates (he's a second-year senior) he's not exactly sure what he would like to do. He might go on to graduate school or maybe he'll take some time off. He jokes tha t he might go "find" himself. He would really like to be an actor. But he doesn' t want to settle for any old Job. He doesn't want to be in TV or the movies; he'd rather be on the stage. "lf you can do Shakespeare and the classics well, you can basically read anything," he said. Acting is not the only thing in Vaughn's life, however. He enjoys reading plays and playing sports. Golf, tennis and snow skiing are his favorites. Vaughn has been here for a while now (he's constantly joking abo ut being a professional student) but there will a time when he leaves SUU. He may be gone physically, but the legend will live on. He said he would like people to remember him for his accomplishments. 'If you can do Shakespeare and the classics well, Iyou can basically read anything,' says theatte arts major Brian Vaughn. CHEVROLET Brian Vaughn, senior thea tre ma;or from Scottsdale, Ariz., loves reading plays. Vaughn recently performed in the Utah Shakespearean Festival. He played Costard in 'Love Labour's Lost' and Herr Schwarz in 'A Flea in Her Ear'. He hopes to con tinue acting in the theatre after h e graduates. A./- BUICK N- GEO 360 N.
