Show ~ OMECOMING: ANYTHING WENT: HOMECOMING '94 CONCLUDES A week that was shaping up as one of the best Homecoming galas in the history of the university received a rude wakeup call from Mother Nature Saturday as seven inches of not fully expected snow forced the cancellation of the Homecom ing Parade, the SK Run and the SUUSA/ IGC Tailgate Party. However, the saying ''the show must go on," rang true as SUU students, alum ni and Cedar City community members packed the Coliseum of Southern Utah for the Homecoming football game against Weber State University. Some 4,600 devoted fans braved the weather and stuck it out until the end of the game that saw the 'Birds go down to defeat at the hands of the visiting Weber State Wildcats. Other events later in the week included t he Murder Mystery Friday night and the groundbreaking for the University Center. "The dream is finally becoming a reality," said SUU President Gerald R. Sherratt at Friday's groundbreaking ceremonies. The new University Center is the final phase in a three-phase project. The Centrum, completed in 1985, was "Phase I," and the current Student Center, built in 1989, was "Phase II." Sherratt also said that SUU's University Center, when compl ted, will be the bestif not biggest~ fac· ity of its kin d in the region. Also speaking at the ceremonies were David J. Jordan, chairman of the Board of Trustees; Stacee Yardley, SUUSA president; Vice President for Student Services Sterling R. Church; and John W. Yardley, member of the Board of Trustees. The ceremonies ended with the Trustees, Sherratt, Church, Iron County Commissioners- Roy P. Urie and Jim Robinson- and the SUUSA Executive Council and Senate getting out their gold shovels and bright yellow hard hats and breaking the ground at the site of the future facility.
