Show OPINION PAUL HARVEY WEU. I fOUND WAAT~ BLOCKIMG YOUR f\Ja U~E, 8UT IX>N'T GET YOUR HOPES UP... COMMENTARY Weela Watkins, a true hero It's been a year California will want to forget. Earthquakes and fires and mud-slides and drought and ... Ceaseless rains. Weela Watkins is a resident of Imperial Beach, Calif. - ln the valley of the Tijuana River - and that river - normally three feet across - was a MILE wide! California decorated the graves of many heroes and heroine this year. But many who were spared owe their lives to Weela Watkins. Weela, with a backpack and dragging a cartload of airlifted food, rescued stranded horses and dogs. When a youngster was walking into the path of a rattlesnake, Weela Watkins jumped between them and took the rattlesnake's bite herself. Recovered from that, she returned to the flood front as the second wave hit ... and then a third. Again and again , Weela, dog-tired but unrelenting, was searching for the missing, rescuing the stranded and directing the fleeing across treacherous waters, and those who could not speak English she LED across. Weela seemed to have an instinct for finding safe paths even through shoulder-deep waters. The organized r es cu e efforts during California's most devastating flooding are commendable; the individual efforts of Weela Watkins are incalculable. She was respons ible for the rescue of more people than anybody can compute precisely. Further, the Humane Society notes that Weela was responsible for the rescue of many animals - more than a dozen horses and dozens of dogs. She has an instinct where dogs are concerned. Weela is one. Weela lives with Lori and Daniel Watkins in Imperial Beach. T his fami ly pet has been awarded n o m edals for h er efforts during th e floods; th o ugh some of us will seek furth er recognition. She did receive a citation and a silver bowl from a dog food manufacturer. Good Housekeeping magazine applauded her. But she has won a greater prize. Mr. Watkins - Daniel - has conceded that she may now sleep where she has always preferred. She now shares the bed with Lori and Dan. One thing more. Heroic Weela Watkins is a dog whose breed has been maligned because of mishandling and being bred and trained contrary to their inherently gentle nature. Heroic Weela Watkins is a PIT BULL!
