Park LORETTA LYNN, The Coal Miners Daughter, has risen to Queen of Country Music and her undisputed reign from her castle in Nashville, is spreading to every nook and corner of the United States, where Americans are truly united in proclaiming Loretta Lynn as one of the most admired women in the world! Theaters around the world are showing The Coal Miners Daughter to record breaking crowds who love the image portrayed by this small-tow- n girl. She started singing at the age of 13, and today gives 125 concerts a year at all the impressive places. When not on the road Loretta is busy with TV guest appearances, recording new songs and keeping up with her dude ranch. Loretta grew up in a log cabin on her grandfathers farm, she now owns a 3,500 acre ranch in Tennessee, a seaside home in Mexico and a hunting lodge in British Columbia. All this is a far Cry from Butcher Hollow, an obscure village in Kentucky where she started her singing career. Loretta was named Entertainer of the Year by her peers and her native stated voted her The Distinguished Kentuckian of the Year, the hill billy girl who sang her way from rags to riches. The lean years are all but forgotten but Loretta is more country than metropolitan. There is homespun material in her glittering robe of success. When we saw this Regal Queen of Country Music in Nashville during Fan Fair 79, she was starry eyed with expectations of the motion picture of her life. The Coal Miners Daughter will be a true story of a hard life in the Kentucky Hills, but I wouldnt have it any other way. There were a lot of tears and hardship galore before I sang at a school social and sold a homemade pie to the man who became my husband. There was some looking back in her flashy eyes as Loretta continued: I dated my beau for one month and shortly before my 14th birthday, we tied the knot. My husband landed me a job in a beer hall, accompanying MODEL CL8217 Similar to illustration PRICED TO LOW TO ADVERTISE 25" diagonal Black Matrix picture tube Deluxe Color System Exclusive ASC circuitry (Automatic Sharpness Control) Room Light Monitor . . . adjusts contrast and color level lighting changes Mediterranean styling in a cabinet of pecan grain finish on hardboard GT-30- 0 g Appfiance Csnter 5975 S. 1900 W. By Judith Vanier Years ago while I was going to high school, I fortunately took classes from one of Americas top creative writing teachers. Wilson Thornley of Ogden High School was his name, but we all just called him Thornley. Well, good ol Thornley had his ups and downs with us, but he never lost faith in our ability to write. The vision of that leprechaunish man popping up on the front row of student desks in impish delight at discovering a new meaning to a metaphor or anticipating the dawning of new understanding in a student, has followed me for years. None of us could tell which put more sparkle into those crystal eyes he flashed when insight was near . . . his insight or our insight. He was forever a student with us. I wonder if he ever truly realized how much he inspired our admiration. His belief in our potential to say something of value to the world in mature and creative style was the most dignifying experience we had had in an otherwise boring and rote memory education. It took me a long time to discover that the real genius of Thornley lay in his ability to awaken the belief that each of us had the unique capability to add something of real substance to society. His belief became our belief and that belief transmuted a bunch of pimply faced teenagers into NOBLE minded men and women. Over the years of education and international travel, which started back in the late 1950s, I punctuated my visits back to Utah with conversations with Thornley. He never changed that twinkle of blue enthusiasm for asking pointed questions or penetrating the answers for hidden meanings. Somehow, I could feel his vicarious pleasure in my unusual lifestyle of international travel and study. Each time we talked, I felt as though he were carefully sounding the depth of my rainbarrel. Somewhere within his writings, Mark Twain had referred to himself as a rainbarrel, just collecting impressions and thoughts which used his pen to spill out upon the paper for people to read. Thornley and I had spent a great deal of vime discussing that concept of creativity. That is, the concept that the creator is really only the instrument of the creative process and cannot claim total doership. Each distant spaced conversation with Thornley would end with the same question, Well, Judith, when are you going to start to write? That was how it always ended until we had our last conversation a few months before he left the mortal shell about a year ago. I clearly remember that significant day. I had just moved back to Utah when I called on Thornley and his dearest friend, The Mrs., as he fondly called his wife for as long as I had known him. Id stopped by Marie Calenders for a raspberry pie to take to Thornley and The Mrs. for morning coffee. Strangely enough, when J got to Thprnleys, the pie in the box turned tniLtobifrlSibaAi instead of rasj6en4A and he seemed delighted for it was his favorite pie . . . at least he said it was his favorite pie. We sat at the dining table for a long time. Thornley, The Mrs. and I, talking about rhubarb pie, life, travels, my studies in India and his long awaited book, Short Story Writing, recently published by Bantam Books . . . (every student had waited for him to write that book). We also talked about training the mind; the nature of the infinite intuitive, the collecting archive in comparative studies of religion I had started as a result of my interest in history and philosophy ; and a host of other subjects near and dear to our hearts. This time Thornley did not wait for the end of the conversation to say When are you going to start to write? He kept interrupting the talking with You have a unique background and knack of explaining things. You must write and share your experience with us. Later in the conversation when a new insight pleased him, he aimed those sparkling eyes at me and spoke with surprising gravity in his voice, You cant wait any longer, you must begin to write it all down! This time I felt an arrow hit my heart, and I knew it was just a matter of time for him to have his way where he had prepared the ground so many years ago. This column will be dedicated to the concept of nobility and noble persons who, like Thornley, have lifted us out of the mud of mediocrity and the bog of despond to point our feet towards great accomplishment our natural birthright. So heres to Thornley . . . weve started to write dear Friend and Teacher, you knew our "rainbarrel was full. at Snowbird running the branch office for Tracy Collins Bank S Trust have received a number of excellent promotions while working al the bank and must give some of the credit lo the excellent business education received al Stevens Henager College school! 250 West Center-8460- 1 Tel (801)375-545- Seminary ... students in life1 PROVO Kristy is a graduate of Roy High School and LDS Once Upon a Noble Rainbarrel An Introduction Charlene Hunsaker, Sodierquist, Roy Brunson, Kitty Hilton, Louise Smith and Linda Boyles.
