Red Cross Bloodmobile visits Roy March 12 The Bonneville Chapter, American Red Cross will hold a Roy Community Blood drawing March 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Roy Elks Club. This is the first opportunity we have had to have the Bloodmobile unit visit Roy. It provides an excellent opportunity for anyone 18 through 65 years of age to donate and enroll in the Red Cross blood program says Robert Farrell, Bonneville Chapter manager. Enrollment in the program can mean a supply of blood in emergencies for any member of a persons immediate family -anywhere in the United States. The advantage in Red Cross eligibility can easily be assessed when considering a pint of blood will cost $25 at local hospitals and $50 or more at commercial blood banks. Many organizations such as the Elks Club, Cutters Roy Laboratories, Coca Cola Co. and church groups have joined the Red Cross Doner Group program. This program is designed so that people who can donate will provide coverage for those who can not give. All employees or members of these organizations are eligible to receivejblood, Mr. Farrell says. Private individuals can insure membership in the plan for themselves and their dependents by donating on March 12. He says proper knowledge can array the fears most people feel when considering a blood donation. Such fears usually range from concern over bodily health to anxiety about the pain involved. Several helpful facts to know are given by Mr. Farrell. They are as follows: A donation of one pint of blood take only of the bodys volume of blood, leaving, plenty for normal bodily functions. Blood is replaced rapidly and the red cell count is back to normal within 30 days of drawing. A doctor is present at all times during blood drawing, a the use- - Neater-Sweeter-Wi- . opening; are useful in cross-matchin- that helps prevent hepatitis cases and is sometimes used to fight measles. He says public concern is growing over the rising incidence of hepatitis transfer by drug users, who frequently sell their blood to get money for their habit. The best safeguard against the oroblem is obtaining blood from olunteer doners, who have no nonetary axe to grind and are ess likely to have the disease. As the nations number one source of blood given by volunteer doners, the Fed Cross has taken steps to increase recruitment of volunteer doners and to develop safeguards to detect hepatitis in blood donations, he adds. above normal precautions because of thorough checks of prospective donors. The drawing, first at the Roy Elks Club is expected to attract a large number of participants. Mr. Farrell says six components are presently derived from whole blood and isolated for use by patients who do not require whole blood transfusions. The components - red cells, platelets, serum albumin, gamma globulin, fibrenogen and cryaprecipitates - perform different functions in the healing process. Red cells and fibrinogen, which makes blood clot to stop hemorrhaging, are usually administered to make up a natural difficiency, Mr. Farrell says, Platelets and cryoprecipitates are two other components which aid the clotting process in persons born without a natural supply.
