He strongly encourages Utah children to spend more time reading and asks residents to contribute to Utahs school libraries through this program. April brings Utahns a monthlong opportunity to give the gift of reading to Utah children, he said. Through the Month of a Thousand Books program, sponsored by Desert Book Company, residents across the state can donate a book to the elementary school of their choice, through Deseret Book stores. The company will then match all donations with at least one additional book ofequal or greater value. It is hoped that Utah residents will donate at least 1,000 books, with Deseret Book contributing up to an additional 4,000 to 5,000 books. The goal is to put far more books in the hands of Utah children and encourage them, to read and to discover the wonder of a great book, said Sheri Dew, Deseret Book president and CEO. Additionally, many ofthe books are hand-selecte- d by school librarians and media specialists, meeting individual school needs. I am pleased to join Deseret Book Company to promote the importance of reading among Utahs students and to encourage Utahns to participate in this worthwhile program, said Governor Leavitt. A world of opportunity and excitement is opened to each of us when we spend time with good, quality - books. Together, lets celebrate the value ofliteracy and the joy found in reading, he added. Those interested in donating books can do so through any Deseret Book store, at which time they also can identify the elementary school, where they want their book donated. Additionally, bookplates for personalizing the donation are available at Desert Book. Utah elementary school libraries will have the books prior to the start of the 2003-0- 4 school year.
