After the approval of the March 6, 2003 minutes, the first item on the agenda was the nomination and appointment of a vice year scholarship to any school of higher education in Utah. Congratulations to these three fine students and also to the others from Kanab and Valley High Schools that participated in the competition. X y nominated Corey Child, sec- onded by Roger Goulding, with all voted aye. When President Mejias term is up, then Child will automatically become Board President. Next up were comments by Commissioner Hulet. Hulet briefly discussed the budget and said that he hadnt had sufficient time to look it over, he will go into more detail at the next board meeting. He then an- nounced that Board member Dixie Brunners term had ended on March 31, 2003. Her seat represents the Chamber of Commerce and the board will notify the Chamber. Hulet then read off when every other board members term will expire. Director Steven Browning stated that Brunner had fulfilled her term, and asked Roger Goulding how he was selected for his second term? He thought that all' he did was submit a letter to the Travel Board, but he really couldnt remember. Hulet then read from the bylaws, which state that the board n,eeds to advertise and submit i three names to the Commission for consideration. ' Board member Barb Sharrow asked if Dixie was still eligible to apply? Hulet replied, By all means. The Board agreed to advertise for the vacant seat and have all tw applications by their next meetQa ing, which will be Thursday, May Wild Blue Country a big hit 1,2003. Director Browning then gave the board an update on the brochures. They are at the printers as we speak. Browning then handed out the first quarter TRT totals for 2003, and said that they were the best first quarter totals since 1999 at $24,763.34. He said that he had talked with local motel owners and that they indicated that at this time they have had no cancellations, that their drive-i- n traffic was up at some locations, and at other local businesses such as Dennys Wigwam and Dukes, that their Coaches were up, with fuller busses than last year. Browning then reported that requests for information packets to be mailed have doubled since the beginning of the year. He feels that a big part of this is due to a small ad that was placed in the AAA Homeaway Magazine. He also feels that the new e Grand Canyon logo, catches the readCountry really Zion-Bryc- ers eye. Browning then handed out information on TIA Travel Outlook, and Utah Tourism Update. These two information packets indicate that the big cities will be hurting this year, and the rural communities should fair a lot better. Hulet then said, The length of the war will affect whether tourism will be up or not.. See TRAVEL, Raw 3 |
