Show Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, January 23, 1985 Pinewood Race Keeps the Eggs From Cracking CLINTON Pinewood Derbies have been a long standing tradition in the Cub Scout Program. Boys, usually with the help Of someone in his family, forms from a block of wood a car to be raced in the Derby. Of course, the fastest car wins. Many times the competition is stiff and the parents competitive natures take over. They want their sons car to win at all costs, no matter who might be hurt in the process. Jim Hansen, Cubmaster of Pack 3987 in Clinton felt the anger and bad feelings often present at a Pinewood Derby detracted from the spirit of fun and togetherness the Pinewood Derby was meant to bring each boy. After his first derby, Hansen vowed to not have the competition detract form the boys achievements again. He feels like each boy is a winner in his own that it hold a raw egg and the raw egg be removeable. Anything could be used to keep the raw egg from breaking. At the race, a track was set on an incline with a pieces of wood right. Thus, the Humpty Dumpty Derby was born. Each scout was given the wood for the cars with the challenge to see how safe the car could tie made instead of how fast it could go. The only rule was at the bottom for the cars to crash into. Each car had a raw egg in the drivers seat. The winner was the NO ITEMS SPARED! EVERY PIECI PIT GROUP car that kept its egg from breaking when it hit the board. Last year only one car passes the test. This year Pack 387 was prepared. There were only a few eggs that cracked and even less that broke completely. The scouts used foam padding, egg carton cups & tissue, among other things to cushion the egg. 5C Kaysville man Given Parole DRAPER The Utah State Board of Pardons granted parole to a Kaysville man last week.
