In the past, Utah has usually been the recipient of transplant assitance from other states. But in recent years Utah has been able to provide assistance to other states, as with the recent antelope move to Nevada. The progressive wildlife management program of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has provided Utahns with a wildlife heritage of which they can be proud. Funding these programs has become increasingly difficult. Fortunately some alternate funding assitance has developed as with the bid permit money used for desert bighorn transplants. However the primary costs of big game management still rests on the shoulders of Utahns. Hunters have carried most of the financial burden for wildlife management in the past. But today, more and more and more nonhunting Utahns who care about the future of wildlife are stepping forward to share the financial load. They are asking their legislators to provide more public assitance to help widlife which belong to landholders. Two transplant projects are planned for desert bighorn sheep this winter. Some 320 antelope were taken from Parker Mountain in Utah and split among three developing herds in other areas of the state. Herds at Puddle Valley wesfof Great Salt Lake, the San Rafael Swell area of southern Utah, and the Bookcliffs east bench area of eastern Utah all received new pronghorns. Division biologists also trapped 150 antelope from the overpopulated Snowville herd, near the o border, and shipped them to Nevada as part of an interstate assistance program which has made possible many of Utahs big game herds, Relocating wildlife to historic or PARKAS Si J Sports Commentary RAY REMUND - said.
