Show V 2C Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, January 16, 1985 Opening Games Continued from page 1C. The Layton Lancers accomplished almost everything they hoped to, except winning the game, in falling to the Bonneville 2 in the Region Lakers opener for both schools. The Lancers plan was to stop high scoring and rebounding center Mike Watson. They held him to just 11 points; far below his average, and held their own in the paint areas at both ends of th floor. But in stopping Watson, Lay-to- n had to leave somebody alone. Forward Shane Stephenson and guard Greg Webber turned out to b6 the lucky ones scoring 17 and 15 points respectively, mostly form the outside. knew we had to defense Watson but Webber is the one that beat us, said disappointed 1 58-5- said. Even so, the Lancers nearly pulled off the upset. Employing a sticky zone defense Layton had its way in the middle, pulling down their share of rebounds and getting the ball down the floor. We didn't want him to get the ball down low, and because of that we had to soften up somewhere else and Webber beat us from the corner. He was the key to the game, Moon added. Laker head coach Gary Alver-so- n agreed. Watson didnt get his regular points tonight, but all the time he was on the floor he was still valuable to us becuase it let others get open to shoot," he Weber AYSO Slated Roy-We- st . just couldn't score enough points. We got the ball inside all we wanted, Moon said. We just couldnt score when we had to. You cant miss those shots if you expect to win. Moon also cited the free throw line as a critical factor in the loss. The Lancers had just 10 oppor- 2075 W. 4690 S. from 6-- 8 p.m. five-1Boys and girls from in are years, born 1967-198- 0, gible. Darrell Martin led the Lancers and won the praise of both coaches, scoring 22 points from all parts of the court. Tom Dobbins had a good night with 12 points and a handful of rebounds and Dan Bankhead added eight points from outside to keep Layton close. Martin is as good a player as I have coached, said Moon. He is a money player and can do anything asked of him. Dobbins had a good game on the boards and Bankhead took good care of the ball and shot well tonight. Early in the game it looked as though the Lakers would run 0 lead at the away forging an end of the first quarter, but the Lancers defense caused a batch of BHS turnovers, along with Martin bombing from out side. Layton was only behind by four at intermission and took the lead on quick scores by Martin and Bankhead to open the second , half.
