Hydrants Under Snow; Roy Warned ROY Its hard to think of snow as a fire hazard, but it is exactly that when it buries fire hy- drants. The Roy City Fire Department is soliciting public assistance to keep the citys 800 hydrants shoveled out Whenever a hydrant is covered with snow, it can mean loss of life and increased property damage. Water is our only protec- tion, said Roy Fire Chief Ed- ward Blacke. The largest tank on city fire engines holds 500 gallons of water. In two and a half minutes of usage, the tank is emptied. If a hydrant is not located in time, there is no water source. Right now there is no viable method of marking hydrants. One district tried putting fiberglass poles on the hydrants, but kids stole them, said Blacke. 'Although the department has metal detectors to help find hydrants, Blacke stresses that time critical when fighting is fires Every second counts when a heuse is on fire.
