Cold Cereal Adds Flavor, Nutrition to Variety of Snacks SHARON NAUTA STEELE Special to the Lakeside Review Cold cereal! You eat it crunchy out of the box or with milk, sugar and fruit in a bowl. At least those are the two most common ways Americans consume more than 20 billion servings of breakfast cereals yearly. But not surprisingly in view of nationwide interest in good nutri- cereals have tion, ready-to-efound their way into a variety of snack foods. Breakfast cereals provide a high percentage of carbohydrates as well as 5 to 25 percent protein, depending oh the ingredients. In addition, fortified cereals contain significant amounts of vitamins and iron. Products containing bran also provide fiber. Some cereal snack foods, like the popular granola bars, are packaged and marketed by the same companies that grind, roll or process whole grains into flakes, puffs, wafers, and other at energy- -producing shapes. But many cereal snacks are prepared by people at home who en Rain joy the ease of recipes geared around convenience products. Probably the most popular cereal recipe of all time is for Rice Krispies Squares. Ingredients like marshmallows and butter supply enough taste appeal to satisfy almost any sweet tooth. Sometimes peanut butter, nut meats, raisins, red cinnamon candies, or chocolate chips are added for a variety. Another standard is the Chex Party mix made up of Chex cereals, pretzels, nuts, and seasonings. Other not so well known con-- , coctions are equally appealing. The homemaker who enjoys preparing quick and easy treats with wholesome cereal ingredients will want to add the following recipes to her collection. Id gone to my initial exercise programming" ap- pointment wearing my wine colored slacks, matching shirt and sweater and penny loafers. No one was impressed. Ill borrow some sweat pants from Brent, theyre too big for him," I said. The pants had fit perfectly around the middle. Ok, they were a little snug. It was a little embar- rassing, however, having to roll is six foot up the bottoms--Brent six. But you cant wear just any kind of sweat pants," choaked Hazel. If you are really going into exercising, you have to wear designers. Why youll need the latest s' styled pants, matching shirt and jacket. I get hot enough, why would I need a jacket?" You really would look kind of funny in them anyway," Id seen the same twinkle in her eye when shed said my boyfriend was just an old pal. Stepping into the tub was even a chore. I thought back over the day. Exercising was not going to be a snap. The club exercises were hard enough. But I was going to have to cut down on the six hours' of shopping with Hazel. She loved a brisk walk in from the north forty at the shopping et malls. |
