According to A1 Trujillo, vice president of academic affairs at CEU, the Utah State Board of Regents and the coal industry of both liked the proposed program. However, at the last of four preliminary meetings last month, Don Ross, president of the Utah Coal Operators Association, told the Regents that because of the unstable conditions of the mining industry at this time, the coal operators could not support the program, Trujillo said. Usually, the industry will pay for tuition and books for employees to take the courses, Trujillo said. Don Ross said that the industry couldnt give that kind of support at this time. The rejection by the Regents, however, is by no means final, Trujillo continued. He said both the Regents and the coal operators liked the program and suggested to keep it on ice until the coal market gets back on its feet. Also suggested by the Regents, was a recom- mendation that the U of U and USU determine mechanisms for offering condensed, short-terschedules found more routinely on the university campuses. r While the course will not be offered until further notice, there is question as to whether the proposed mine training center will be affected by the decision.
