Show W' W' rrr W' Wednesday, December 22, 1982 Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 5A Bobby Knight, each of whom has had trouble controlling his to the editor t Where was mayor? Tulhe Editor: As you are probably aware the U.M.W.A. District 22 held their convention in Price Dec. 8, 9 and 10. The mayor of this fair city was invited to welcome the delegates who came from many areas the country. My of question is why does the mayor of Price not have the common courtesy to at least send a representative to this function. Is the mayor not the official who should most promote functions of this type for the city of Price, are functions of this type not translatable to dollars for the merchants of Price, and are the members of the U.M.W.A. who live within the boundaries of the city not citizens and taxpayers. I grant you that the mayor is not expected to be a puppet of the United Mine Workers of America, but should we not command the same respect as any other group. It seems to me that our mayor is a lip service official who is not the least interested in performance no matter what his campaign slogans said. We the citizens of Price should get what we were told we would get when Mr. Martines was elected and that is someone who will represent all areas of the population with respctable and responsible government. In conclusion, Mr. Editor I would ask was the District 22 United Mine Workers of America convention not a news item? Thomas A. Grames Price Character of coaches To the Editor: Yes Echo, I attended the 1951 state championship game when Box Elder. Carbon shut-oBehind fired up teammates I scored the first touchdown. Few of your facts are correct. You mistakenly report that nobody state final football wins shut-ogames anymore. Why then, just this year, did Coach Steve Dangerfields Brighton High Bonneville 41 to team shut-o0? You raised this and other irrelevant issues. My concern is with the use of tobacco and profanity in local sports. Some ut s enthusiasm on and off the field. So, if profanity has become the rule rather than the exception, Im glad Im out. Ian Macdonald Price at birth but atrophying quickly afterwards. In the book Behavioral Kinesiology: How to Activate Your Thymus and Increase Your life Energy, John Diamond, M.D. says, The evidence over the last twenty on the thymus years glands role in immunology is overwhelming. The thymus gland is the first organ to be effected by stress. It is also the seat of our life energy. While reading Dr. Diamond, Echo, you wake up to the fact that (1958-197- people are temporarily weakened when verbally abused. Best personal regards and a happy holiday season to all! Richard H. Morley Price To the Editor: If Ms. Roberson is such an avid BYU authority and sits on the sidelines of every BYU football game and has heard (personally) LaVell Edwards use abusive language toward his football team then she has the right to say what she said! I dont believe she has. If she has heard some of the football players on the BYU team use abusive language, well, they are only human and not all the players on the football team are LDS! They win because they are of high moral character, including the coaches, and because they have a winning spirit. And, Ms. Roberson, I have been to many a BYU football game over the past 10 years. I have never heard abusive language, except from some of the observers of the game. And, yes, Mr. Morley was on the state championship team of 1951 and Im sure Mr. Morley has stood on the sidelines of many more college football games than you have. Patty White Price P.S. Should they demand anything less from him? What a player should learn and does learn from football isnt always clear cut, but is it unrealisitic to expect the most from someone who spends so much time with your children? Im not foolish enough to believe that a coach isnt going to swear once in awhile, but do we have to encourage it with an its all part of the game attitude? Roberson, your doctor gave you archaic information about the thymus gland being present 1 letters, particularly those longer than words and those containing libelous or obiectionable information or something in poor taste Usually, letters to the editor are considered on a first come, first serve basis The opinions and ideas expressed in cartoons and personal columns on the editorial page are not necessarily the opinions of the Sun Advocate 200 After all, what is the difference between the teacher in the classroom and the coach on the field? Both have teaching certificates, give grades to their pupilsplayers and get their budgets from the school board. So, if we wont allow profanity and the use of tobacco in the classroom why should it be allowed on the field? Are the two places that different? If the average coach is lucky, he will win a few games and his players will learn something. I dont believe the coach needs to use profanity to be a better Christmas Eve Candlelight profanity and almost always take away power from their team in so doing. Why should we adopt false educational ideas? Part of Carbons problem this year lies in the profane mouths of some assistant coaches. Kernodle, the principal and the school board need to inforce high moral standards among the coaching staff. Our kids deserve model coaches, and some Coaching to win the editor: In my opinion some people in our community have lost touch with the purpose of high school and college football, and for that matter the job of a coach. In my ten years of football I never met a coach who thought it was his job to prepare his players for a job in the NFL. Most coaches wanted to win all of their games and teach their players something about winning, losing, sacrifice and dedication.
