Show 6A Sun Advocate. Price, Utah Tuesday, October 16, 1990 Sewing specialist teaches children sewing and self - esteem When Carroll Haddock takes four or five children under her wing to teach them sewing, shes more concerned with building young peoples than with straight self-estee-m seams. I dont believe in competition. It either creates too much pressure, or you get somebody elses work. This is for fun. There is such a sense of accomplishment when somebody says, 1 did this myself. We are building more than sewing skills," Haddock said. We are building human beings. "Kids take such a beating in todays world. If they can go home to their rooms and unwind and sew something and succeed, the world becomes okay again." Haddock, a sewing special- ists at Cleos Fabrics, has been teaching sewing skills to children age three and older for years. She remembers her own first sewing lesson from her mother at the age ofseven. She remembers remaking clothes, sewing up bedspreads, saving and sewing every usable fabric and having access to her mothers patterns. I learned I could combine patterns and make my own. My mother was very gracious Diane Cook and Alexis Kochevar learn how to pin a pattern on fabric without making wrinkles. They use pins with beaded heads, which are easier for small hands to manipulate. Kmart three-an- d child- five-year-o- ld ren to use needle and thread, on starting machines and often sergers. ds Sometimes, children need instructions adult students may not require. They need to learn how to sit at a sewing machine, where to sit, where to put their foot, where to hold their hands, how to hold scissors and how to pin, Haddock said. They learn some things adult sewers sometimes dont know which kind of needles, pins and threads to use for which fabrics; which fabrics are soonest to dull pins, needles and scissors; and the names of the parts of the sewing machine and the sewing machine needle. I cant have them saying, that thlngee that does that," Haddock said. They need to know the names ofthe parts so I can help them." She teaches her students to use their fingers to get to know the fabric and coax it to do what they want. Experience has taught Haddock that children need pins with beaded heads, so small fingers can grasp them easily. A box of pins is taboo in her class. Either a pin cushion or magnetic grabber is required equipment. When a child knocks a box of pins on the floor, it is just too big a job for them to pick them all up," she explains. One full session is spent organizing patterns and lesson materials. I try to teach them to sew with their heads before they sew with the fabric." A child with the right tools , the right training and a pat on the back can do anything, Haddock insists. This year she is teaching from the book, Kids Can Sew by Carolyn Curtis, which includes nine clothing projects children can be proud to wear. Before this year, she made patterns for each of her students. Classes are taught on a monthly basis, with children continuing for as long as they want, advancing through a series of books. Mothers and grandmothers arent invited to the classes. Thejfcare too concerned about their children performing or shining for me. I just want what they do here to be okay. The skills will eventually come. If one takes two months to complete a project and smother takes two hours, its okay. We have no deadlines. . Sometimes parents fret over that. These little ones dont need deadlines, the deadlines come soon enough in their lives," she explains. It doesnt matter to Hadif a seam isnt straight or dock a hem is a bit crooked with a fold in it. Once the product is complete, it all comes together, she points out. What really comes together is the pride. One little 'girl giggled all the way to the back of the store to put on her project, then giggled all the way back to the front," Haddock said. She just kept saying, I made it myself. I made it myself. Our main goal is to have productive little people coming out of here who can say, I feel okay. Its not that Haddock is unconcerned about teaching children excellent skills, she looks forward to the day when her students can sew everything they wear from the skin out." She realizes building sewing skills takes time. They develop like motor skills, she explained. And then, there is always more to learn. Ive been sewing for 33 years, and Ive barely scratched the surface," Haddock pointed out. adopts new retail symbol captures the companys able image," said Kmart CARROLUS1BERNINA llakt a mt from old pair the 90s in Oak Park, Mich."
