Show Tuesday, October 16, 1990 SBA seeks SALT LAKE CITY-S-tan Nakano, director of the Salt Lake district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration, has announced that the SBA is accepting nominations for the 1991 Utah Small Business Person of the Year and several special advocate awards to be presented during national Small Business The 1991 theme is Small Business: Building Americas Future." Any individual or organization dedicated to the support of the small business community in the U.S., including but not limited to trade and professional associations and business organizations, may submit nominations for Small Business Person of the Year, advocate and special Small Business WTeek awards. Individuals who own and operate or bear principal responsibility for operating a small business are eligible. Partners who jointly own and operate a small business may be nominated as a team, so Week, May 1. small-busine- person of year ss long as the number of individuals in a single nomination does not exceed three. Nominations will be evaluated according to the following Advocate awards will be given in the areas of minority growth in number of employees; increase in sales andor unit volume; current and past financial reports; innovativeness of product or service offered; response to adversity; and evidence of contributions by the nominee to aid community oriented projects. Individuals who have used their professional expertise and talent to further the publics understanding and awareness of small business will also be honored as winners of our various advocate awards, explained Nakano. Naomi was eight years old at the time and has lived in Carbon County since. ' She lived in several mining ' .. Each month, the residents at Castle Country Care Center pick one person to be highlighted as the resident of the month. The person is given special treatment and has their picture and details of their personal background put up in the hall. For the .month of October, iNaomi McKendrick was chosen. Though she doesnt know why, she said it is an honor. She was born at Terry, S.D. on June 17, 1904, the youngest of six children. The family moved to Wyoming when her father became ill and soon after, he went to Canada where he passed away. Naomis sister and hus- band were living in Morhland at the time and talked her mother into moving with the children to Sunnyside. They arrived there in 19 13. An older brother worked in the mine to help support the family, while her mother took in laundry 1 communities, 'Spring Glen: and eventually settled in Helper. In 1924, Naomi married John McKendrick. They had five children, Leland, Ray, Jane Wright and two who passed away in. their youth. She has six grandchildren, 13 and one great-grandchildr- I enjoyed my family," Naomi said. I loved raising . them and taking care of them. She also loved her dogs and . raising flowers: Tve had a pretty good life, she said. Tm 86 and get around pretty good. A year ago I had a stroke, and thats why I am here. Td like to live my life over again most people do, she added. There are things Id like to do that I didnt.
