Show Recreation Tourist Guide, May 198821 'High' describes Southeastern Utah mountain biking (Continued from Page 3) thrills thrown in. One of the intriguing aspects of Moab that makes it a favorite for mountain bikers is the wide variety of other trails and terrain that can be explored by bicycle. There is the Moab Rim Trail, a steep, arduous climb up the way to view the rock art by Anasazi Indians 1,000 years cliffs near the Colorado River, ago. or the genteel Kane Creek There is the Gemini Bridges Trail, a meandering ride along Trail, a downhill ride the banks of the Colorado, that starts in high vegetation, through groves of cot- glides through a maze of tonwoods, with stops along the canyon country with 20-mi- le CJ panoramic views of the natural bridges, and drops off at the main highway north of town. In the heat of summer, a favorite ride is Sand Flats Trail. Starting high in the aspen and pinyon pines of the La Sal Mountains, Sand Flats offers an optional sidetrail to pristine Oowah Lake and a coasting ride through forests and mesas before dropping down into town. The Monitor and Merrimac trail offers gigantic redrock buttes, spires, mesas and d canyons. The Cadillac of bike tours is the White Rim Trail. A three-da- y ride along the spectacular White Rim, the trail follows the Green River south, then reverses itself and heads north overlooking the Colorado. But whenever they ride in Moab, bikers invariably return to the Slickrock Trail. The spring-watere- down is usually easier than going up, but caution on the slick rock still reigns. Coming the canyons scenery, the ridges, and alike, proudly describing the hill they climbed, advising each other on side canyons to explore and making plans to return to Moab, the small southern Utah town that has become a mountain bikers technical challenges of riding the trail turn the most jaded into addicted enthusiasts. On any morning, the youll find riders on the trail, beginners and experts year-roun- d, paradise found.
