Show 8Rcnation-Tourls- t Guide, May, 1988 Cliffs and rope provide ultimate canyon excitement Not much can match the thrill of walking backwards off a towering cliff top and then literally walking down the vertical face to the bottom. Rappelling lets the weekend adventurer do just that, The fact that Southeastern Utah is filled with canyons makes rock climhing and rappelling very appealing as a summer sport or pasttime. Stepping off a cliff in Buckhorn Wash., this young rappeller begins his descent to the floor of the canyon, many feet below. Buckhorn is frequented by those enjoying the sport. RIVER Both gradual, short cliff faces and towering, vertical faces offer the novice to the expert some great rappelling in this part of Utah. This sport is growing in popularity in the region, which makes learning the sport easier. Sporting goods stores can direct you to someone who can teach the adventure. Although here are no schools in the area which teach the sport, there are lots of residents who enjoy the excitement of stepping over the edge of a cliff, suspended only by a rope. Boy Scout troops offer instruction to their scouts and many local residents can be talked into teaching one how the art is accomplished. Some of the best rappelling is available in Buckhorn Wash in Emery County, while easy faces for learning can be found in many areas. One of the best for learning is Spring Canyon above Helper. Sporting goods stores in the area usually carry complete supplies for those who want to rappel, although long ropes often need to be ordered. Rappelling is something that can be done anywhere and with little expense. It is the ideal pastime for those who like to camp in the desert canyons of this part of Utah.
